Early life and education

edit

Schlossberg was born at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City on May 5, 1990,[1][2] to author and diplomat Caroline Kennedy and designer and artist Edwin Schlossberg. She is a granddaughter of 35th U.S. president John F. Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.[3][4] She and her two siblings, Rose and Jack, were primarily raised in Manhattan's Upper East Side, and has also spent significant time at their maternal grandmother Jacqueline's Red Gate Farm at Martha's Vineyard growing up.[5] Schlossberg's father comes from an Orthodox Jewish family of Ukrainian descent, and her mother is a Catholic of Irish, French, Scottish, and English descent. She was raised Catholic,[6] but her mother would also "incorporate Hanukkah" in the family's holiday party.[7]

She attended the all-girls Brearley School, which she attended with sister Rose, and the Trinity School, from which she graduated in 2008.[8] She attended Yale University and graduated in 2012 with a BA in History. At Yale, Schlossberg wrote for the Yale Daily News and eventually became the paper's editor-in-chief.[9][8] She was also a member of the senior society Mace and Chain.[10] She went on to receive a masters in American History from the University of Oxford in 2014.[11]

Career

edit

Schlossberg was a reporter for the The New York Times covering culture and climate change originally starting as an intern in 2014.[12][13] She has also written for The Atlantic,[14] The Washington Post,[15] Vanity Fair,[16] and Bloomberg[17] among others.

In October 2014, she wrote an article about a dead bear found in Central Park,[18] which was later revealed in 2024 to have been placed there by her relative Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. Schlossberg responded to the revelation, saying "like law enforcement, I had no idea who was responsible for this when I wrote the story.”[19]

In addition to writing for Times, Schlossberg is the author of Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don't Know You Have, released in August 2019 by Grand Central Publishing.[20][21][22] She has been a columnist for Bloomberg View and a reporter for Bergen County Record.[23]

Schlossberg has often accompanied her mother Caroline in her official duties as diplomat in Japan and Australia.[24][25] Upon the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 2013, Schlossberg delivered remarks and took part in a ceremonial wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial at Runnymede, in the English county of Surrey, alongside U.S. Ambassador to the UK Matthew Barzun and Baron Jonathan Hill of the British House of Lords.[26]

Personal life

edit

On September 9, 2017, Schlossberg married physician George Moran.[27] They met while both undergrads at Yale.[28] Their wedding was officiated by former Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick at Martha's Vineyard.[29][30] The couple had a son in 2022.[31][27]
