Charles Herbert Andrews (May 14, 1908 – December 7, 1981) was a decorated submarine commander and double Navy Cross recipient during World War II who reached the rank of Rear Admiral in the United States Navy.
Early life and education[edit]
Charles Herbert Andrews was born to Charles M. and Mary W. Andrews (née Herbert) in New Haven, Connecticut, May 14th 1908. He attended Hillhouse High School in New Haven, graduating with he class of 1925. The following year, Andrews was accepted to the United States Naval Academy.[1] While attending the Academy, he participated in Water Polo, Soccer, and Lacrosse.[2] He graduated from Annapolis in 1930 and was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy.
Early military career[edit]
Ensign Andrews's first assignment after receiving his commission was aboard the USS Concord (CL-10) in the gunnery department. He held this post until November 1932 and subsequently sent to Naval Submarine Base New London to attend the Submarine School there. Andrews completed the course in June 1933 and was assigned the USS R-10 (SS-87) as her Communications Officer until August 1933. After his assignment aboard the R-10, Andrews was attached to the USS Bonita (SS-165) as her Engineering Officer, a position he held until December 1935. Following this assignment, he joined the USS R-2 (SS-79) as her Executive Officer until June 1937.[1]
Andrews returned to Annapolis, Maryland to attend a marine engineering course there and in July 1939 reported to the USS R-13 (SS-90) as her executive officer. The following March, he reported to the USS Tambor (SS-198) with the same position. After completing his role aboard the USS Tambor, Andrews reported to the USS S-24 (SS-129) as her commander.[1]
World War II[edit]
With the outbreak of World War II, Andrews was detached from the S-24 and joined the staff Commander Submarines, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, as a Force Engineer. He served in that role until June 1942, at which time he was assigned to the USS Gurnard (SS-254) to complete her fitting out. The Gurnard was commissioned 18th September 1942, with Andrews as her first commander. The USS Gurnard completed a six week shakedown and training period and departed 2 November 1942 for Rosneath, Scotland. After a refit, the USS Gurnard departed for the coast of Spain. After patrolling for 24 days, sighting only friendly ships, Andrews and the Gunard returned to Rosneath.
The second war patrol of the USS Gurnard was very different than the first.
