Ion C. Dimitriu-Bârlad (born 17th of May 1890, Bârlad - d. 1964) was a Romanian sculptor.

Biography

Ion C. Dimitriu-Bârlad was born on the 17th of May in 1890 in the city of Bârlad. He graduated “Gheorghe Roșca Codreanu" high-school of his home town and then went on to graduate from the Bucharest School of Belle-Arte, where he was noticed by his professors, Dimitrie Paciurea (sculpture) and Fritz Storck (drawing and sculpture). He eventually studied at Julian academy in Paris (1913-1914).

In the years of 1910-1911 he also attended the courses of the School of military and infantry in Bucharest. He took part in the War to unite the Nation. He took study trips throughout Europe (Italy and Greece - 1921 and 1922; Spain - 1929). He worked as a teacher at the “Gheorghe Lazăr" high-school in Bucharest, teaching artistic and linear drawing, before becoming a specialty inspector (1927-1929).

He firstly gained recognition as a sculptor of monuments dedicated to the heroes of World war 1 and numerous busts portraying prominent Romanian scientists and of the Romanian cultural elite (Titu Maiorescu, Vasile Pârvan, Bogdan Duică, Dimitrie Brândză, neurologist Gheorghe Marinescu, General Ion Dragalina - 1920, Ion Bassarabescu, Ion Creangă, Ion Manu, Mihai Eminescu - 1930, Mihai Viteazul, Nicolae Bălcescu, Nicolae Leonard, Nicolae Gane, poetul Ion Dragoslav, professor N. Longinescu, Raul Bulfinski, Samson Bodnărescu).

Dimitriu-Bârlad was the recipient of multiple awards and distinctions throughout his career, such as the Official Salon Award of Bucharest (1911), the Composition Award of the Ministry of Arts (1943), the Order of “Cultural Merit” class I for art no. 149068/30 October 1943, the Award for the creation of the Graphical Background (1949) and the Award for the work “Discobolul” (The Disc Thrower) from the Union of Plastic Arts (1952).

He had multiple personal expositions throughout the country: Iasi (the Drossu houses - 1918), Bucharest (Mozart Hall -1919), Bucharest (Military Circle - 1920), Bucharest (Roman Arenas - 1921/1922), Bucharest (Minerva Hall - 1925), Bucharest (Romanian Athenaeum - 1930), Bucharest (Dalles Hall - 1935) and Bucharest (Universe Hall - 1940). He also had expositions at the Official Hall in Paris (1914)

Ion C. Dimitriu-Bârlad passed away in 1964. He was the grandfather of singer Margareta Pâslaru. In present day, a street in Bârlad municipality is named after him.
