• One of the most famous early family members was John Crabbe (fl.1305-1352), a Flemish merchant, pirate and soldier. He defended Berwick Castle for the Scots against English forces in 1318, but after being captured by the English in 1332, he then assisted the English when they again besieged at Berwick in 1333. As an engineer, he was in charge of the siege machine, causing "sore problems" for the English defenders of the Castle. In that year, the Count of Flanders committed to the King that if he caught John Crabbe he would hang him for 'murder'. However, this same John Crabbe was a much sought after commander, and King Robert the Bruce rewarded him with lands in Auchmolen, Auchterrony, and Prescoby, for his services with his siege machine. In 1332, John Crabbe also assisted Bruce in the siege of Perth. The same person became high on the political scale of the Scottish nation, and his sept branched into many directions. He treated with the English for the release of Earl David of Huntingdon, and ultimately obtained his release for him to become King David of Scotland. The name flourished for the next few centuries on their many estates.

Hi Buster7, I need a little help. A New Page Reviewer has been bugging me for some time about the 2020 Q2 timeline of Trump's presidency, and has nominated the page for speedy deletion under A3 (empty page w/no content) for CSD. Would you mind backing me up here? The timeline doesn't start until April 1 (there is no way the timeline can have content as April 1 hasn't even started yet), and I would rather not have to contest the deletion at this time. @Mgasparin: Yes, I saw the minor kerfuffle in progress. That is when I made that "undo" editing mistake the other day. I was about to comment but then thought.."Why escalate into a battle what seems to be on the road to being resolved?" I would have commented that it was much ado about nothing (by the other editor) and he should just "bridle his pony" and wait a day or two. Isn't there a slang term from Freudian psychoanalysis that describes someone "who pays such attention to detail that it becomes an obsession" and goes around here and there and does things that may be an annoyance to others? Yes, I agree. Editors with pedantic or overly dogmatic behaviour do drive me insane. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ I did ask that in the spirit of IAR he leave it alone, but to no avail. Ah well, it's over now. There is no "shelter-in-place" here in BC, but there the government here does ask that people stay indoors as much as possible. I really can't wait for this social distancing ordeal to be over. Help please

Buster could you help me write up a request for EoftheW for User:Ozzie10aaaa. We worked together as co-editors for the West Africa Ebola article and I know that he works with and contributes to our medical articles with, I think, one GA article. I know that there is a way to bring up an editors main works page, but I don't know how to do it. Buster, I just have to say that if WP (and the world) had more goodhearted editors such as this one we would all be a lot happier. He has just been such a joy to work with. Well it looks like the cat is out of the bag on this one!--I never dreamed that Ozzie had your page on his watch list.. Now as for your fine compliment, I wish I could see myself that way. Perhaps I am better than I think but I truly have to work very hard with my edits/wording and am ever so grateful that we have a fine copy editor that is interested in many of the same articles that I work on and follows me around. So anyway, I'm not anything special as an editor and neither is Ozzie. But there is more to this place than being able to write the best copy and that is knowing how to work with others and create a joyful atmosphere to work in. Looks to me like you just wrote the highlights of his nomination. All we need to do is a little research, see what others (aside from ourself) say about him, find a few appropriate adjectives and "Bob's yer Uncle. I just love Bob's your uncle. I use it whenever possible. Of course here in the States I get the strangest of looks and comments. But that's all right.

But...you should know that when I find an editor with 75% of their efforts devoted to creating and molding articles and under 10% of their edits on talk pages I know that they do not engage in arguing etc. They are to busy working. I couldn't disagree more. For example there is a discussion going on right now at the Abortion article, an article that I've worked on for many years. I've spent hours and hours reading and discussing at that article about the wording for the lead--we are talking about just a few words here, not some big change. The last big blowup was several years ago but it goes on all the time. It is easy enough to sit back and say "I agree with xxx" and then you could say oh look low talk page edit count! But how difficult it is to wade in and present one's thoughts and the reasons behind those thoughts. And then reading pages and pages of the thoughts of others, and then responding to them. And on and on. It is hell. But if editors do not constantly work on that article (and many, many such articles) the so-called pro lifers would rob women of their right to choose in a heartbeat. And people do quote Wikipedia to back up their arguments. I know that before the last big lead change (though it was only a few words, if that) Catholics and other religious groups had been using our article to back their position. I for one call those editors that use our talk pages to argue article content the backbone of and hope for the accuracy of our project. I do not mean to criticize Ozzie for not taking part in the discussions--he is better at other ways to help this project. We are all different with different talents. Sorry Gandy but you misinterpret my Use of the word Drama. Lets stick w/ Ozzie as my example of what I mean when I say "No Drama here". When you go to page and scroll down you'll see a big circle segmented into "namespace totals" for the editors work which is displayed in percentages. When I am vetting an editor for the award, one of the more important things I look for is where is the editor spending their time. Are they working or are they talking? 80,368 of Ozzies 104,458 total edits are to articles or 76.9%. Article talk, user talk and other user talk amount to about 15%. I think high talk percentages are a clue to lots of chatter, lots of over-discussing. So... its just a clue or a hint (to me) that someone like Ozzie does not spend a lot of energy arguing. Or, to use my words, doesnt spend their time creating "drama". I could be wrong about using the percentages as a barometer...that's always a possibility. But I think the NameSpace Totals give me a window into the work habits of an editor that, most of the time, I know very little about other than what the nominator and perhaps seconds tell me.

Please don't get me wrong Gandy. I'm not saying you're wrong about blow-ups and draw-out discussions that happen all the time especially at "Hot" articles and topics. Remember: I cut my teeth at Sarah Palin in 2008 and worked with you at the various BP oil spill articles. You mention the Abortion article above and how OZ doesn't contribute to the battle to add (or remove) stuff. Maybe that is not his forte'. Like you say we are all different with different talents. Buster, thanks for the explanation and I do understand, however I think we still may tend to disagree. For example in the many controversial articles on Trump, editor SPECIFICO writes thousands of talk page words using WP policy links to demonstrate things that I am in total agreement with but am not such a policy expert. She only very seldomly adds article page edits. But I am eternally grateful that at AfCs and such I can just say "per xxx and xxx". Like you, I don't like to argue and will only do it when I have no choice. At any rate, I do tend to bristle when an editor talks about TP edits as though they are not a good thing (though I understand that I did not exactly understand your position). Anyway, moving forward here's the deal on Ozzie: He knows how to cooperate. Ozzie and I worked together on the Ebola article and he did all the looking for new information and he posted it to the article. He didn't go to the talk page and ask for "permission", and why should he? We had both become experts of a sort on Ebola. But on the other hand I felt completely free to reword some of his edits and regularly pare off old information to make room for the new--and I didn't ask TP or Ozzie's permission either... So that is what I mean--his ego is strong enough that he does not feel a need to defend his every edit and is able to work with others for the benefit of the project. Questionable edit at Trump presidency timelines

I'm in two minds about this edit. It changes this edit by me which asserted that Biden won the election. This is what RS are saying, and only fringe media sites like the Daily Wire or Breitbart are saying otherwise. Sure, if you want to delve into semantics, Biden has not truly won yet as the EC hasn't met. Are we playing to the Trump supporters by saying that Biden is only projected to win by MSM or should we dispense with the fine print and just say he won? • Currently, when our reader comes for knowledge about the daily "Who won?" situation, the timeline hints at the ambiguity of the declaration. Soon president-elect Biden will be officially declared as the 46th President. I suggest we wait a bit and let the ambiguity linger. I debate with myself about mentioning the Administrations stance on "the transition" and "the daily intelligence briefings" and the blatant disregard for normalcy. Pinging @Mgasparin Monitoring the various presidential timeline articles since 2008 has required reverting the occasional (what I felt were...) unconstructive edits that were made to them. Preventing WP:Bloat was always my concern. I never intend to deterred other editors from editing the timelines constructively as long as the descriptive texts remained brief and concise. At times the descriptive texts are used to allow political bias to "creep" into a timeline. I readily admit my own bias but do my utmost to contain it. Yeah, I get that. Political articles are difficult because we all have our own ideas and feelings about Person X, either positive or negative. Deterring newer editors has never been my goal either, but it does sometimes happen on articles that concern persons who are controversial. You either love or hate Trump; there seems to really be no other option. This really makes it difficult for a lot of people to write about him in an objective manner and keeping their personal feelings about him off Wikipedia. Editor of the Week

I recently learned about this great initiative. Now that I know of it, I can think of about 5 to 10 editors who I think deserve it. My reading of the situation is that there is not a lot of nominations. Would you consider it a helpful or an unhelpful thing for me to nominate so many? Any advice on that is welcome. Thanks so much for offering your involvement. Your recent nomination was splendid. The process is simple. The nominations "sit" at the Nomination page for a short period waiting for possible "seconds and thirds". After a week or two I move them to the Accepted Nominations page where they join the queue awaiting the awarding process. At the moment I am just ready to award the first in line this afternoon which will leave 6 nominations; 4 of which I nominated, and your nomination is currently the last in line. 6 in line is a good margin. It relieves the stress of ME having to find a good candidate. I much prefer that working editors nominate the fellow editors that they see in action, doing whatever it is they do to improve the encyclopedia and the arena we work in. I, myself, have a "back-up" list of editors I consider when the line gets too short. If the Queue gets too long, the day of awarding gets too far removed from the initial nomination. I rarely insert an editor into the head of the line except if the nomination is of a timely nature. It doesn't happen often, but then I'm the only one here. Welcome aboard! Check out the Hall of Fame and the Recipient response pages. We started this process of awarding Eddies back in January of 2013. I consider it my legacy. On a minor terminology note: typically I wouldn't refer to someone who received the Editor of the Week recognition as someone who "won". The idea is that it's a low-key pat on the back (though still a tangible connection between someone who recognizes the recipient's good work and the recipient, which is always gratifying). isaacl (talk) 17:34, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. The first place I believe our paths crossed was on the talk page for the article for Tim Raines (which, interestingly, is still the most recent non-bot posted thread on that talk page). This talk page is the first (and sadly not the last) place where I experienced the frustration of being unable to attract others to comment on a disagreement, and thus having the dispute frozen in time, awaiting some future person to do something. As a result, I was a bit wary during our discussion, but happily we were able to communicate effectively and amicably. If everyone were as collaborative as you, I might be a more regular contributor today. I appreciate your dedication at chipping in to support Wikipedia's mission in whatever way you can. Buster, I just want to thank you again for the EotW nomination in 2023. I will forever cherish that moment and the words written. When I say "Be a Rainbow" it comes from Maya Angelou's writing's on how we can be impactful in our neighbor's life. You and the others who supported my nomination are definitely a bright Rainbow in my sky for that thing that seems so simple to many yet has so much depth to a perceptible person. "Formerly x name"

Hey Buster,

I noticed that one user in the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week#Recipients of Editor of the Week aka The Eddy has (formerly x name) next to their name. I noticed there's a lot of users listed by their former name on there, would you be okay with me updating the names on the list where appropriate to their current names, while noting their past one? I'd leave out instances where a user has vanished of course. I'm suggesting this because it'll become easier to search if an editor has already received the award. Senior Wikipedians

WikiProject Wikipedians aged 70 and older has been inactive for some time. The following three proposals may help invigorate this project.

1. Change the name of this project to WikiProject Senior Wikipedians.
2. Open membership in this project to users who are at least 60 years of age and have made at least 50 edits in the past year.
3. Open supporting membership in this project to users who are less than 60 years old but have made at least 50 edits in the past year and support the goals of this project.

Suggested goals for this project:

1. To support collaboration and communication among members for the advancement and improvement of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement.
2. To encourage older people, retired people, and soon-to-be-retired people to participate in Wikipedia both for the advancement of the encyclopedia and for their own personal enjoyment.
3. To encourage older people to share their experience and expertise for the improvement of Wikipedia.
4. To encourage older users to use their experience and expertise to help younger and less experienced users.
5. To encourage participation in local and regional Wikimedia events.
6. To sponsor Wikipedia meetings and classes at places where older people gather.

I made a Blunder, a typo, and it swelled into situation that threatened my joy at being a WP editor. All is well. Toby the Cat

Toby lives outside. He is not homeless as he has many homes he visits throughout the neighborhood. But my building is his base. He once was an inside cat but his owners, tenants of mine, let him out one day, he tasted freedom, and now scorns entering any doorway. He just arrived (at 6AM) to check his dish which another tenant fills daily. Empty! I told him to go catch a city rat and eat it this time instead of dropping it off, decapitated, in my yard. He looked at me and walked away, insulted that I asked him to actually eat his prey. I didn't want to tell Toby that his former mate, Amy, was passing away upstairs. See, the former jerk tenant, that I had to evict for non-payment of rent, had four cats. Toby, his mate Amy, and two of their kittens that were adults. The jerk tenant completely abandoned the three inside cats leaving it to me to call the Anti-Cruelty Society to pick them up for adoption since they were good cats. They came but we only found two. Two weeks later, Amy jumped out of a hide-a-bed we were dismantling for discard and went to hide. For weeks she hid (not to well since we knew where she was) on the enclosed back porch, We LET HER BE, as instructed by the Beatles but she didn't eat food or drink we put out for her. On day she was gone! I left windows open and figured she jumped out one and went to join Toby in the Great Outdoors. Sadly that was not the case. A few days ago, my first floor tenant tells me he has been hearing mice in his bathroom ceiling. Knowing there is an access panel to the 6' foot tub and that I had opened it weeks ago to start a repair that was now on hold, I knew it was Amy. As I write this, Amy is in the throws of death. I can't get to her, poor thing. I dropped some wet food down to her and water but she is comatose...still breathing but barely. If I could I would end her pain but I can't reach her to help. Thanks Word. I have emailed you an update. She was a wonderful shy creature that lived in pig sty with a Father and son who claimed to love her and her children. I won't report the details. Toby was lucky and ran away from home. His wife and kids suffered many indignities. Using planters as a litter box is a hint as to the poor care they were provided. Enough said. I will be sure to give Amy a proper burial in the back yard. Toby is a constant daily visitor. He is a great lucky cat. He got away from a prison! Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 06:10, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

• Amy didn't survive her ordeal. She passed away overnight. Animal Cruelty passed my call on to City Services Who will probably call the second Tuesday of next week. There was not much we could do to help her or ease her suffering. If you can visualize this, she was halfway... under pipes and the floor all under the tub. We scooted food and water, but she never touched it...not for days. She was never socialized to humans and because of that she hid and stayed away. Her chosen hiding place led to her death, so sad, poor little thing. We plan on wrapping her in linen and burying her in the garden. I'm sure Toby will visit. Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Buster7

For some strange reason, with all that's going on, I find myself reflecting on my request of eleven years ago. But first I want to thank @Go Phightins!: and @AutomaticStrikeout: for their unwavering faith in my abilities to swing the mop and their fantastic support and timely advice at that time. They were right...I would have been a tremendous administrator. In RL, I filled administrative roles in many, many venues. With the Chicago police, with Rotary, with the local library, with the 2010 US Census, as General Manager of busy auto repair shop without any car repair experience (auto damage appraiser at the same time). Also remembered is that I was the altarboy for the Monsignor at the High Mass on Sunday. I was the lieutenant of the crossing guards in Grade School. I had the capacity to start at the "average/bottom" and wind up at the top...or at least close to the top. If you take the time to read the request for administratorship ; you will see that it was one little-minded gnat of an editor, one provocateur with malicious intent, that had it in for me. He threw stones whose ripples reverberated throughout the process and caused others to question my Wikipedia career. My downfall was his prime goal. But, luckily, in the long term, he failed. I'm still here and from the recent support and comments I have received here and elsewhere, I have left a positive effect on hundreds of editors. Because of signs of inactivity at his page and talk, I presume the gadfly has passed away. I might take the time to thank those that supported me and spoke in my behalf. Those were the highlights of the time. The misinterpretations and nastiness, the close-mindedness, the out-right attacks, of the Opposed will probably go ignored. But, I'm glad I didn't make it. My failed attempt led me to Editor of the Week which has been my home, my refuge, for 15 years. One more thing. I am in the best of health for a young gentleman of 78. Some aches and pains, high blood pressure, psoriasis, low grade leukemia. All is good. I'm just reflecting on my successes. The roller coaster of a life well lived. I like the 7 to be lower than the B, as in vitamin B7. But I look at a thread above ""The Shit Happens T-Shirt Theory"" and the B and the 7 are on the same line, not one slightly below the other like the caption to open this thread. What to do???? I'm not sure if you're asking for the location of the preference where you specify your signature? It is located at Preferences → User profile → Signature.

I see the "B7" in the heading in a sans-serif font which doesn't use old-style numerals, so the tops and bottoms align. Your current signature already specifies a font family to use; you can use the same or similar markup (for example, you might use a <span>...</span> instead of an <em>...</em> element) to set that to whatever font has the desired appearance (though if you want people to see it the way you intend, you should choose a font that is commonly installed by default across different operating systems (Windows, MacOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, Linux, ...).

A visibility tip: your current signature sets the "color" style property; it's a good idea to also set the "background-color" style property as well, to ensure the two work well together. This is particularly important now with the official dark mode. isaacl (talk) 21:59, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
