Inherited from Old Ruthenian ништо, ничто (ništo, ničto), from Proto-Slavic *ničьto. By surface analysis, ні (ni) +‎ што (što). Cognates include Ukrainian ніщо́ (niščó), Russian ничто́ (ništó) and Polish nic.
