Ovaj gen kodira komponentu puta sinteze diftamida . Diftamid je posttranslacijsko modificirani histidinski ostatak koji se nalazi samo na faktoru elongacije translacije 2. Konzerviran je od arhebakterija do ljudi , a na meti su difterijskih toksina i egzotoksina roda Pseudomonas A za zaustavljanje sinteze ćelijskih proteina.
Homolozi kvasca i kineskog hrčka ovog proteina katalizuju trimetilaciju histidinskog ostatka na faktor elongacije 2 , što rezultira diftinskim ostatkom, koji se zatim amidira kako bi se dobio diftamid. Za ovaj gen je pronađeno više varijanti transkripta koje kodiraju različite izoforme .[ 6]
