Proposal to change auto-archive on Main Talk page
[change source]I would like to suggest we auto-archive the main talk page with different setting. I know a lot of us monitor the page, so questions are usually answered or statements receive a response relatively fast. Some are odd baalth ngs, ke lian editor posting in another languag,e , where ask them to post inEen igl.
I would recommend we use the same time frame as we do on simple talk, which is 10 days and a minimum of 5 topics left on page. This page is currently set at 1 year.

Discussion
[change source]- Just for confirmation, you are planning to change the auto-archive for Talk:Main Page to be limited to a few days? If so, I don't have an issue with that. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 13:02, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Lee Vilenski Yes from 1 year to 10 days. Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 13:06, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- I think I was the last person to tweak archival settings; Simple talk currently has a setting of 10 days, Admin noticeboard of 14 days. I reduced these by a third, about half a year ago. This page gets a lot less traffic, so we would likely be looking at settings between 30 and 45 days. Note that when it is set up, we also need to tweak the archives, so that there is a space before the archive number. Manual archival should be avoided, there are bots that do this perfectly.--Eptalon (talk) 00:03, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Eptalon I could agree with the 40-45, it’s a lot shorter than one year and enough of us watch this page. What do you mean by

- Support - sure. Not sure this really needed a formal proposal/RfC, but it seems wise to have a smaller timeout for active threads than a whole year. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 13:08, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Lee Vilenski Hi Lee. Anything that is set up that we want a major change for requires a consensus. Our admins are pretty strict about this and if the change gets made without consensus the editor could be blocked. It’s always better to gain consensus here than be bold like that. Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 15:36, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- I would prefer 45 days per Eptalon's reasoning: it gets less discussion than simple talk. At the moment, there seems to be no automatic archiving here - there are discussions with no comments since 2021. Kk.urban (talk) 16:49, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Kk.urban I am all for that time frame (I believe I stated that above). It is set to auto archive, but an exception may have been made by the owner of the archive bot to not touch this page. The configuration is correct. I am forbidden from touching the page to archive the old ones like that from 2021, 2022, and 2023. We are at the 7 day mark for this to run, so I feel we have consensus to adjust to 45 days. I will ping the admins to close this out and make sure it is set appropriately. Thanks and edit well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 16:58, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Eptalon - As you can see we have consensus to adjust the time to 45 days and the name adjustment you mentioned is fine. Can you please adjust the configuration.
- @Operator837 - Is there a reason the archive bot has not touched this page to archive the old conversations from 2021, 2022 and 2023 that meet the one year old requirement? Maybe an exception was made on the bot to not touch this page? Thanks and edit well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 17:01, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

[change source]Discussion
[change source]I have gone ahead and made the following changes before the bot kicks off:
- Set the timeframe to 45 days (down from 365 days)
- Expanded the amount of space from 75k per archive to 150k so we have less archives
- Added a space before the archive number
- Made sure old archives are still accessible
- Ensured the archive box can be seen at the top where it should be so it can be searched
If it runs and works tonight, we should be good. If it does not archive, then it is a bot exception. Thanks and edit well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 03:04, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Proposal to archive this page
[change source]This is no longer valid. See the next section titled Talk:Main Page#Request for Comments: Archiving this Page.
This is a proposal to have Bot873 archive this talk page following its BRFA at Bot873. It is currently only authorized for User talk pages and the admin requested pages. It states that to archive any other namespace or page, it requires community consensus. That is what this is for, so vote away.
The current settings are as follows:
- Archive any discussion that has not been edited in the last 45 days (using the last time stamp in the discussion)
- Must leave the last three (3) discussions (regardless of how old) on the page.
This page was being archived by SassoBot then my bot was dropped in to archive all pages that would allow it (some pages are restricted to Sassobot or no bots). My bot got shut down and Operator created a bot to fill in the gap. So this is nothing new to have this page archived again.

- why are you telling people how to "vote"? This is a discussion, not a vote. An RfC (or whatever the simple equivalent is) should also be neutrally worded and start with RfC: (or equivalent). I get why you might not think this is an RfC, but it's laid out exactly like one. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 10:22, 11 April 2024 (UTC)- @Lee Vilenski Because this isn’t a request for comment. We are actually implementing a task for a bot to do, not for a change in policy. It’s can be either way in reality and it’s written the way it is to give background on what used to happen prior to the implementation of the newest bot in which the owner only sought to do user talk pages instead of what the other bots have done previously. Instructions are put there to remind people of how to vote since we do not have an actual page like ENWP which has it at the top of the page, as ours go on the page it applies too. Request for Comments: Archiving this Page
[change source]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
- Result -This page should be archived; there's a bot conmfiguation at the top of this page; bots should honor it, and archive discussions accodingly. Setup or archival should be the same as the other pages that get archives, such as Simple talk, or admin noticeboard. Specific archival settings are different.--Eptalon (talk) 20:08, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
This is an RfC to archive this page. The BRFA for Bot873 excludes anything outside of user talk pages and admin related pages (decided on by the admins). Above, we had a discussion to change the settings for the archiving of this page, without realizing this page (and namespace) was purposefully excluded by the operator due to policy on requiring consensus for any public page that is outside the above named "namespaces."
The current settings for this page archiving is as follows:
- Archive any discussion that has not been edited in the last 45 days (using the last time stamp in the discussion)
- Must leave the last three (3) discussions (regardless of how old) on the page.
Please feel free to leave your comments or !votes in the appropriate sections below.

Neptune
[change source]On the front page as of now, the picture is different. I've seen this happen before, but I was ignored. In the article, they use a completely different picture rather than the one of the front page. LOLHWAT (talk) 11:42, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

- @PotsdamLamb and LOLHWAT: The article previews on the main page come from subpages of Wikipedia:Very good articles. For example, this one is at Wikipedia:Very good articles/Neptune. These do not update automatically so they have to be updated by a person, when the article is changed.
- About the picture of Neptune: I liked the one on the front page better, but sadly, it's a false color image, so we should probably update it to use the true color image that's displayed on Neptune. Kk.urban (talk) 19:21, 17 April 2024 (UTC)

Inquiry
[change source]How many articles are there in Simple Wikipedia? Brick No.2 (talk) 06:08, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- Special:Statistics says there are slighlty more than 254.000 "content pages". I guess that includes the "Wikipedia:" namespace, which is mostly about coordinating the project. There are likely less than 50 pages there, so it doesn't really influence the count. Eptalon (talk) 07:02, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- Why did you add the decimal point? Or was it a typo (meaning the number would be 254 000 Brick No.2 (talk) 09:05, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- The thousands separator is either a full stop (.), a comma (,) or a space. Eptalon (talk) 09:11, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- Is that a foreign thing or something? In Australia the full stop isn't used to separate thousands - or at least I don't think so. There is a chance that I am wrong. Brick No.2 (talk) 09:17, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
