Country singer Glen Campbell dies after Alzheimer's battle

Singer-guitarist Glen Campbell, the ''Rhinestone Cowboy'' who went on a farewell tour to play hits such as ''Wichita Lineman'' and ''Gentle on My Mind'' before Alzheimer's disease robbed him of his talents, has died at the age of 81. Colette Luke has more.

(upsound Campbell) Country music artist Glen Campbell, known for hit songs like 'Rhinestone Cowboy', died on Tuesday at the age of 81 after battling Alzheimer's disease. He passed away in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by his family, according to his publicist… In 2011, Campbell announced he was formally diagnosed with Alzheimer's ... The 'Wichita Lineman' singer then embarked on a nationwide 'farewell' tour that ended in November 2012… On tour, three of Campbell's eight children played in his band, giving their father musical backup ... but also emotional support… Campbell was one of 12 children of sharecroppers in southwestern Arkansas… He headed to Los Angeles in the late 1950s where his career eventually took off.. with the breakthrough hit -- 'Gentle on my Mind' -- in 1967... He won four Grammy Awards in 1968.. Campbell also took a stab at acting and starred opposite John Wayne in the 1969 film 'True Grit'… But his stardom led to personal troubles… He was married four times.. He abused drugs and alcohol.. In 2003, he relapsed and served 10 days in jail for drunken driving in Arizona.. the embarrassing mugshot of him scowling -- going viral... But in June, Campbell finally released his studio album, called 'Adios' -- recorded after his 2012 farewell tour wrapped up... the final lyrics from an artist whose work spanned some 50 years...
