Every so often a band will have something in its past so good and undiscovered that it could make fans out of non-fans and bigger fans out of lukewarm ones. Two examples come immediately to mind: "Live from the Record Plant" with Steely Dan from 1974 (showing how the pin-neat productions had squeezed life from the studio versions) and Heart's 1976 set on Washington State University public TV. Both get you to look at the respective bands in a whole new way.

This could rise to that level. I bought it because of "Throw That Beat in the Garbage Can," an unlikely first B-52's song to grab me in college at the time of release. It got live play when "Mesopotamia" was fresh, but has been heard rarely since. If they had to edit down 3 or 4 hours of material I'm sure it'd get cut, which is why I'm glad they had to use the whole set here.

The real show-stopper that blew me away, though, had to be "Give Me Back My Man," a well-loved song that both Wilsons just crush here. Cindy in the sprawling brown wig on the vocals puts on a vision of effortless virus-shedding sexual energy not seen since Mariska Veres of Shocking Blue, and Ricky showcases the guitar work that carved the niche for the band through the first two bedrock albums. Worth it just for that track alone.

Fred is the best version of his goofball self, and as mentioned the relative lack of production enhancements across the songs work to the great benefit of the performance. It can't help but remind of another famous Athens band of not long afterward, R.E.M., and their similar aversion to too many live gimmicks that could stand between the fans and the music.

They turn in good performances on other standards like "Private Idaho" and of course "Rock Lobster." Is it their best-ever video performance? Maybe, maybe not, but chronologically it wouldn't be far off from whatever other option could beat it. It's definitely something to show any skeptical person what it was like for a few shining years (like showing 50s Elvis to someone who's only seen 70s Elvis).

FOR IT"S AGE the video is OK the sound is not crisp but OK stereo. They like long shots a bit too much for me. ABSOLUTELY fabulous to see the band in their prime. Great Concert. I would ping it one start for the lousy use of technology but seems even with YEARS of existing folk can not do a dvd menus right. Present day band interviews at the end of the songs. USE THE TECHNOLOGY OMG. So I would ding them a star for stupidity but I'm so happy the see the vintage footage I'll let it slide. Essential B-52s way better audio than the German concert. There are two US concerts (I know of) 82 and 83 I do not recommend them unless you want to know the HISTORY of that concert but 83 has a few selectable songs. BUT the thing was for the 82 concert the B-52s supposedly ruled that day - essential B-52s!

This is a great concert with VERY acceptable video quality given the lack of other B-52 options. My reason for 4 star vs. 5, is the forced buzz kill commentary between songs. This should be an optional feature in the menu but its not. Sure, it's interesting but that part is a one & done for 99% of us. But instead, we're forced to watch it again and again and again... Ugh.

Every member of this band is overflowing with creativity and greatness. B52's should have been as big as U2 and many other rock bands. Seeing this is the proof. Fred is an amazing front man. Ricky is an amazing guitarist up there with the best. Kate and Cindy are like no other. Strong vocals and tight playing all around. Keith was a standout drummer. Reminded me of Blondies Clem Burke. As for this concert, I was nervous about overall quality. Of course the video isn't hi-def but it's better than I thought. Pretty sharp and not too grainy. The camera work is surprisingly top notch. I loved the different angles they shot of the band in full swing. What amazes me even more is how stripped down the lighting and production was. It really made you focus on the B's playing and moves. It just goes to show what actually talent is. No team of outside back up dancers and singers. No video. No light show. No audio tricks. Just a band so far ahead of it's time, yet perfect for the time. A+++++

This is a must have dvd. They captured a pure gold performance from one the greatest festivals of all time, The US Festival. Any fan of the B52s or the US Festival in general will want to see this rare gem of a concert.
Would give it 10 stars if I could.

Great footage of the full set from the B-52's at the US Festival on September 3, 1982. I was there in the crowd that day, and watching this footage brought back happy memories. Sound quality on the DVD is good. The recent interview with the band added perspective on the event. I am happy with this purchase and recommend this DVD for anyone who is a fan of the B-52's.

Always exciting to view a great live band, such as the B-52's. No doubt, their stage presence is always consistent throughout their tours. This DVD is no exception.

I LOVED the vintage footage of the band, having been fortunate enough
to have seen them in Tucson in 1982, and the present - day interview footage.
I just wish that the interviews had been put in as a dvd extra and not coming
in every few songs (it detracted from the you - are - there sensation that I was
hoping for). My favorite part of the interviews were Cindy Wilson's memories
of her late brother, guitarist Ricky Wilson. In my book he was a more tragic
figure than Freddy Mercury - he died at a much younger age and didn't get to
share in the band's end - of -the - eighties mainstream success.
