This could rise to that level. I bought it because of "Throw That Beat in the Garbage Can," an unlikely first B-52's song to grab me in college at the time of release. It got live play when "Mesopotamia" was fresh, but has been heard rarely since. If they had to edit down 3 or 4 hours of material I'm sure it'd get cut, which is why I'm glad they had to use the whole set here.
The real show-stopper that blew me away, though, had to be "Give Me Back My Man," a well-loved song that both Wilsons just crush here. Cindy in the sprawling brown wig on the vocals puts on a vision of effortless virus-shedding sexual energy not seen since Mariska Veres of Shocking Blue, and Ricky showcases the guitar work that carved the niche for the band through the first two bedrock albums. Worth it just for that track alone.
Fred is the best version of his goofball self, and as mentioned the relative lack of production enhancements across the songs work to the great benefit of the performance. It can't help but remind of another famous Athens band of not long afterward, R.E.M., and their similar aversion to too many live gimmicks that could stand between the fans and the music.
They turn in good performances on other standards like "Private Idaho" and of course "Rock Lobster." Is it their best-ever video performance? Maybe, maybe not, but chronologically it wouldn't be far off from whatever other option could beat it. It's definitely something to show any skeptical person what it was like for a few shining years (like showing 50s Elvis to someone who's only seen 70s Elvis).
Would give it 10 stars if I could.
to have seen them in Tucson in 1982, and the present - day interview footage.
I just wish that the interviews had been put in as a dvd extra and not coming
in every few songs (it detracted from the you - are - there sensation that I was
hoping for). My favorite part of the interviews were Cindy Wilson's memories
of her late brother, guitarist Ricky Wilson. In my book he was a more tragic
figure than Freddy Mercury - he died at a much younger age and didn't get to
share in the band's end - of -the - eighties mainstream success.
