Summary
This volume contains six essays arranged chronologically. Contents extend from the eleventh century to the sixteenth and geographically from England to the francophone world and Scandinavia, covering material remains, art, documentary material, and the value of reconstruction as a research technique. Topics include garments, soft furnishings, and more utilitarian textiles.
Our readers are always interested to learn of surviving medieval textiles, especially little-known ones. Catherine Besson-Lagier accordingly examines a little-known piece of clothing dated between 1160 and 1270 from Bussy-Saint-Martin, France (Chapter 2). Identified as a sleeve associated with medieval padded armor, its shape and composition were documented during its restoration in 1995. The article places this item of clothing in its historical, textual, and archaeological contexts; offers hypotheses on the general shape of the garment to which the sleeve could have been attached; and presents the results of experiments with the creation of such a garment that takes account of the technical characteristics of the original sleeve and argues for the value of reconstruction as a research methodology.
Moving from this obscure medieval textile to the best-known of them, the embroidered Bayeux Tapestry, and focusing on the more than 700 animals depicted in the Tapestry's main register and borders, Gale R. Owen-Crocker (Chapter 1) notes that whilst many of them are recognisable types, remarkable for their vitality, they are not spontaneous creations from life. Rather, they are very dependent on earlier textile art and recent manuscript models and, in addition, were constructed with templates. The author suggests that many of the animals are not merely authentic accessories of medieval life (in the main register) or decoration (in the borders) but that they provide subtle clues to human emotions and motivations in the power struggle which the Tapestry depicts.
Continuing the focus on embroidery, Amica Sundström and Maria Neijman investigate a group of medieval Scandinavian textiles which they call gilt-leather coverlets, after the narrow gilded strip of leather used to decorate these embroideries (Chapter 5). The preserved objects have been used in churches, but written sources show that they were present in secular environments as well. The combination of materials, techniques, and design makes these embroideries unique to medieval Sweden and Finland. The authors describe the preserved objects and show how reconstructions of them can create a deeper understanding of their construction and expression.

Background
Studies have reported mixed findings regarding the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on pregnant women and birth outcomes. This study used a quasi-experimental design to account for potential confounding by sociodemographic characteristics.
MethodsData were drawn from 16 prenatal cohorts participating in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program. Women exposed to the pandemic (delivered between 12 March 2020 and 30 May 2021) (n = 501) were propensity-score matched on maternal age, race and ethnicity, and child assigned sex at birth with 501 women who delivered before 11 March 2020. Participants reported on perceived stress, depressive symptoms, sedentary behavior, and emotional support during pregnancy. Infant gestational age (GA) at birth and birthweight were gathered from medical record abstraction or maternal report.
ResultsAfter adjusting for propensity matching and covariates (maternal education, public assistance, employment status, prepregnancy body mass index), results showed a small effect of pandemic exposure on shorter GA at birth, but no effect on birthweight adjusted for GA. Women who were pregnant during the pandemic reported higher levels of prenatal stress and depressive symptoms, but neither mediated the association between pandemic exposure and GA. Sedentary behavior and emotional support were each associated with prenatal stress and depressive symptoms in opposite directions, but no moderation effects were revealed.
ConclusionsThere was no strong evidence for an association between pandemic exposure and adverse birth outcomes. Furthermore, results highlight the importance of reducing maternal sedentary behavior and encouraging emotional support for optimizing maternal health regardless of pandemic conditions.

Understanding place-based contributors to health requires geographically and culturally diverse study populations, but sharing location data is a significant challenge to multisite studies. Here, we describe a standardized and reproducible method to perform geospatial analyses for multisite studies. Using census tract-level information, we created software for geocoding and geospatial data linkage that was distributed to a consortium of birth cohorts located throughout the USA. Individual sites performed geospatial linkages and returned tract-level information for 8810 children to a central site for analyses. Our generalizable approach demonstrates the feasibility of geospatial analyses across study sites to promote collaborative translational research.

This multiwave longitudinal study investigated potential transactional and accumulating influences among corumination, interpersonal stressors, and internalizing symptoms among a sample of early and middle adolescents (N = 350; 6th–10th graders). Youth completed self-report measures of corumination at Times 1, 2, and 4, and negative life events, internalizing symptoms (general depressive, specific anhedonic depressive, anxious arousal, general internalizing), and externalizing problems at all four time points (5 weeks between each assessment across 4 months). Results supported hypotheses. First, baseline corumination predicted prospective trajectories of all forms of internalizing symptoms but not externalizing problems. Second, baseline corumination predicted generation of interpersonal-dependent, but not interpersonal-independent or noninterpersonal stressors. Third, interpersonal-dependent events partially mediated the longitudinal association between baseline corumination and prospective internalizing symptoms. Fourth, a transactional, bidirectional set of associations was supported in that initial internalizing symptoms and stressors predicted later elevations in corumination, and in turn, corumination predicted later symptoms through the mediating role of interpersonal stressors to complete both streams in the transactional chain of influence. Fifth, girls and older adolescents exhibited higher corumination, but neither age nor sex moderated any associations. These findings are discussed within a transactional, developmental cascade model.

We are investigating complete samples of southern hemisphere flat spectrum extra-galactic radio sources drawn from the Parkes 2.7 GHz Survey (see Bolton et al. 1979 and references therein). These samples are being used for a variety of investigations, including a determination of the space distribution and luminosity function of radio QSOs, their radio size distribution, as well as the structures of the individual sources. Accurate positions are being determined, as well, in order to establish an extra-galactic position reference frame in the southern hemisphere.
