Kenneth Karas is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the court in 2004 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. Between 1992 and 2004, Karas served as the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.[1]

Karas is also a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. He was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on May 23, 2022.[2]

Education

Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Karas graduated from Georgetown University with his bachelor's degree in 1986 and later from Columbia University School of Law with his J.D. degree in 1991.[1]

Professional career

Karas was a law clerk to federal judge Reena Raggi for the Eastern District of New York in 1992 before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office as assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1992 to 2004.[1]

Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (2022-present)

Karas is a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. He was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on May 23, 2022.[2]

Southern District of New York

Karas was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York by President George W. Bush on September 18, 2003, to a seat vacated by Allen Schwartz. Karas was confirmed by the Senate on June 3, 2004, on a voice vote and received commission on June 13, 2004.[3]

Judge Karas sentenced a convicted hedge fund swindler, Sam Israel III, to additional prison time for failing to timely surrender to serve his prison term in an elaborate fake suicide scheme.[4]
