Role Summary

Starwest Botanicals is an industry leader in the herb, botanicals, spice, and tea industry. Located in Sacramento, California, Starwest has grown to become a global player in the organic and better-for-you space. With nearly 50 years of experience, the company is well positioned in this multi-billion dollar industry.


The Director of Operations is responsible for managing all aspects of a company facility. They are accountable for daily decision making and the implementation of strategic company priorities. The Director of Operations oversees raw material storage, manufacturing, finished goods warehousing, and shipping. This position is based in Sacramento, California.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly manage the operations staff and daily activities of a company facility.
  • Work with supply chain and global sourcing to manage raw material and packaging inventory.
  • Guide and direct the conversion of raw materials to finished product.
  • Oversee warehousing and shipping.
  • Actively participate in production planning, scheduling and the SI&OP process.
  • Build a highly engaged and self-sufficient team.
  • Oversee capital planning and project execution for the facility.
  • Manage inventory levels to meet sales expectations.
  • Collaborate with sales, marketing, and innovation teams on new products.
  • Liaise with leadership to make decisions for operational activities and set strategic goals and budgets.
  • Supervise staff from different departments and provide constructive feedback while setting a positive and confident leadership example.
  • Regularly evaluate the efficiency of business procedures according to organizational objectives and implement improvements.
  • Review financial information and adjust operational budgets to promote profitability.
  • Revise and/or formulate policies and promote their implementation.
  • Evaluate overall department performance by gathering, analyzing and interpreting data and metrics.
  • Develop and implement a labor and staffing plan to meet the needs of the business.
  • Ensure that the company complies with all legal and established industry regulations such as OSHA, FDA, and EPA.
  • Ensure the execution of food safety programs and compliance with industry audits and certifications such as SQF, BRC, and organic.
  • Comply with all federal, state and local regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of prior experience working in a multi-shift food or beverage manufacturing facility is required.
  • Plant Manager or Director of Operations within the food and beverage industry strongly desired.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field such as operations management, supply chain, or engineering.
  • Experience leading a multi-shift operation with 100+ employees.
  • Must be able to work unsupervised in a highly complex and evolving work environment.
  • Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Office, database management, spreadsheet creation, email, internet.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly oversee operations managers and supervisors.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and train staff.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of each operations department.
  • Provides constructive and timely feedback to improve performance.

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.


Compensation

  • Salary range = $130,000 = $175,000 annually.
  • Qualifies for full-time benefits: medical, dental, vision, 401k.

Travel Required

  • Travel between company facilities within the Sacramento, CA area regularly required.
  • May be required to attend trade shows and industry events as directed by supervisor.


Work Location and Reporting Relationship

  • This position requires the candidate to be on site in Sacramento, CA daily.
  • Work from home or remote work is not available for this position.
  • This position reports to the Vice President of Operations.
