The mission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is to spread the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. In the faithful pursuit of this mission, St. Mary Mother of God is seeking an Organist and Music Director. The Organist provides music for three Sunday masses and Holy Days and directs the parish music program. This role reports to the Pastor and has a flexible start date in Summer 2024.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide music at two Sunday Masses (10:30 AM and 7:30 PM)
Provide music for other Feasts and Holy Days as scheduled
Direct the parish quartet, professional ensemble specializing in polyphony
Oversee the parish Gregorian schola
Coordinate special music provided by local choirs for certain Feasts throughout the year
Coordinate parish concert series
Coordinate maintenance of the parish’s historic (130 years old) and recently restored 2-manual mechanical action Hutchings pipe organ
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Strong leadership skills and proven ability to manage others
Excellent musical ability, organ proficiency desirable but not required
Excellent conducting abilities and ability to teach music in an engaging manner
Pleasant singing voice and ability to lead congregational singing
Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities at once
Demonstrated knowledge of the Catholic liturgy
Required Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience
Prior experience as a church musician preferred, experience as a director a plus
