Job Description

Location: Ames, Iowa

Shift Requirements: Days, Monday through Friday, travel required.

As a Roadside Development Specialist 3 in the Office of design you will successfully help to enhance Iowa’s roadsides, by developing roadside landscape projects, working with IA DOT staff to administer projects and provide technical expertise.

With your commitment to excellence and desire to learn, you will be responsible for identifying the needs of IA DOT staff statewide, conducting field work and inspections, producing landscape construction plans, and following projects from conception through construction to guarantee their success.

This position requires strong communication skills, knowledge and experience working with Iowa's native plant communities, knowledge of erosion control strategies, landscape design, and the ability to manage projects in a timely manner. You will provide technical assistance to internal staff, consultant and contractors while utilizing CADD and other advanced software applications.

Special Requirements:

Requires valid Driver’s License.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • All of the following: (a, b, and c):
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in agronomy, landscape architecture, engineering, horticulture, or forestry; and
  • Three years of full-time work experience in professional roadside development, site plan development, pollution prevention plan development, or watershed management; and
  • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience in agronomy, landscape architecture, engineering, horticulture, or forestry, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes three years of full-time work as a Roadside Development Specialist 2.
