Hennessey Engineers is actively seeking a creative and talented Transportation Engineer for employment in our Milford, MI office. This person works as part of a design team preparing road design plans, maintenance of traffic plans, pavement marking plans, and sign plans primarily for County and Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects located throughout the state of Michigan. This position requires self-motivation, commitment to high-quality work performance, excellent planning and communication skills, and the ability to work independently with other staff in a project team environment. 


Key Responsibilities 

The job duties listed below are typical examples of the work performed by the Transportation Engineer. Not all duties assigned are included. 

  • Work with senior engineers to create road design plans, maintenance of traffic plans, pavement marking plans, and sign plans. 
  • Make plan corrections and revisions from redlined drawings. 
  • Create and update MicroStation CADD drawings under direct supervision of others. 
  • Work with senior engineers to develop 3D CADD models. 
  • Interpret and understand drawings from multiple disciplines and incorporate relevant information into design plans. 
  • Evaluate and apply standard engineering practices and procedures and use sound engineering judgement to make adaptations and modifications to fit the project. 
  • Calculate quantities and update cost estimates. 
  • Prepare and/or modify Special Provisions. 
  • Communicate effectively with client representatives, staff, local agencies, and the public. 
  • Effectively communicate project status and issues to the project engineer. 
  • Participate in project meetings, client meetings, and public meetings. 
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals. 

 

Education, Experience, and Licensing 
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum three years of related engineering experience desirable
  • Valid Michigan driver's license required
  • Ability to obtain State of Michigan Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred

 

Desired Skills/Experience 
  • Experience in MDOT Road Design, Traffic Engineering, and/or Traffic Design desirable
  • Basic knowledge of Traffic Engineering
  • Familiarity with the Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and MDOT traffic and design standards and guidelines desirable
  • Basic/intermediate MicroStation/OpenRoads Designer (ORD) experience desirable
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to clearly compose routine correspondence, reports, and provisions
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Ability to determine work priorities and adjust workflow as necessary
  • Ability to receive, understand and follow instructions and/or guidelines
  • Ability to make decisions using sound engineering judgment
  • Have a positive attitude and enjoy working in a team environment

 

Employment Status and Working Conditions 

This position is for salaried full-time employment performing Transportation Engineering duties. Overtime may be required at times, to meet contractual obligations and deadlines. 

This position will be assigned to Hennessey’s office in Milford, Michigan. Employees assigned to this location are expected to work out of the office. However, employees may be allowed a flexible schedule and the option to work off-site out of their homes.

Minimum Physical Requirements Exposed to occasional lifting and carrying. Must be able to climb two flights of stairs. Will have normal office working conditions and be required to sit and use a computer. Capable of traveling to, and maneuvering around, project sites during client and project meetings and site observations. Able to use various technical equipment for communication and documentation. Visual acuity is necessary to perform responsibilities.
