Advance in your career while significantly impacting the community you serve. As an Engineering Specialist at the City of Durham's Public Works Department, your role is crucial in shaping the development projects that enhance our quality of life.Â

This position is customer-facing and provides engineering, administrative and technical support for development for the Public Works Department of the City of Durham. Work shall involve the application of engineering skills and knowledge gained through training and experience to provide information on a wide variety of public works existing and proposed projects in order to help facilitate architects, engineers, landscape architects, surveyors, and residents engaged in the planning, design, and construction of projects in the City of Durham.

Responsibilities include all functional aspects of front desk customer service, including directing customers to appropriate city and county resources. Provide technical and administrative support to staff on incoming construction drawing submittals through Box.com and outgoing projects under review through the Land Development office tracking software. Work is performed under general supervision, and excellent problem-solving skills to understand and resolve issues as they arise.

  • Responds to all forms of customer requests for information on existing and proposed projects in the City of Durham.
  • Tracks all incoming and outgoing construction drawing submittals through Box.com and Land Development software applications.
  • Review and process ROW (right-of-way applications) and some types of Public Works Building Permit Reviews. Process ROW and other types of permit fees received through Paymentus and record fees in Land Development tracking software,
  • Sort and distribute mail for Public Works.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Stormwater Billing and Engineering Services, the Development Services Center, One Call, and other customer services contact points across the city/county.
  • Performs various technical engineering support duties associated with the planning, design, and construction of streets, avenues, traffic ways, sewers, drains, Stormwater, water, and sewer system improvements, for projects, both public and private.
  • Make daily Munis deposits as required and adhere to the city's fiduciary guidelines.
  • Assist with desk procedure updates and seek out process improvement opportunities.
  • Performs customer service duties, including providing project or job status, policy, and other information to residents in person, via phone, or online systems; responds to and tracks requests and complaints.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC)Â
  • Four years of paraprofessional engineering support experience in the area of assignment.
  • A valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record acquired within a time frame established by the City.
  • Experience working with municipal/private staff in engineering, contracting, construction, or land planning areas.
  • Experience interpreting technical data, engineering specifications, and engineering drawings.
  • Cash handling experience.
  • Customer service and customer relations management experience.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and ArcGIS and other types of database systems.
  • Proficiency in MUNIS (or equivalent) database accounting application system.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with a permit tracking system (Land Development Office software or equivalent).
