Description

Supervises the daily operations of a functional or service unit within the university libraries.

  • Supervises clerical staff in the daily operations of the unit, to include hiring, discipline, training, and performance appraisals.
  • Plans and coordinates work schedules and distribution of work assignments within the unit.
  • Oversees the daily operations of the unit, including budget oversight, maintenance of supplies inventory and resolution of problems.
  • May communicate with vendors, publishers and subject librarians regarding orders, invoices, receipts or current holdings.
  • May provide reference and information services to library patrons as needed.
  • Prepares regular and ad hoc reports on unit activities as required.
  • Coordinates or participates in special projects as assigned.
  • Assists in developing library policies, procedures, goals, and changes to services.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

The Library Supervisor serves as the primary staff member on the service desk at the William R. Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library.

The hours for this position are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Duties Specific To This Position

  • Assists patrons in person, by phone, and via e-mail with basic reference and service inquiries related to art, architecture, and design, and refers complex inquiries to the appropriate staff member.
  • Assists Circulation Manager in hiring and training student library assistants.
  • Supervises shelving, shelf-reading, shifting, and collection maintenance and trains student workers to perform these duties correctly and efficiently.
  • Schedules student workers and ensures student worker payroll stays within budget allocations.
  • Facilitates in-house repair of library materials in cooperation with the Libraries Preservation and Reformatting department.
  • Facilitates the organization and binding of serials with the Libraries Resource Management and Metadata department.
  • Provides specialized reference support for faculty and students.
  • Troubleshoots and assists patrons with basic technology issues related to the library’s work stations, scanners, and copiers.
  • Performs closing procedures for Jenkins Library.
  • Communicates with library staff and external representatives regarding facilities issues and emergencies.
  • Assists the Head of the Architecture, Design, and Art Library with in-house tours and classes, campus outreach, and materials displays.
  • Serves on committees, task forces, and ad hoc work groups as part of the professional staff of University of Houston Libraries.
  • Performs additional job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

18 months and 3 years experience

Requires specialized training in basic trades, principles, procedures, practice, routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required. Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related (customer service) experience.

Department is willing to accept education in lieu of experience -- specifically in art, architecture, or design

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION INFORMATION:

  • Customer service experience, not necessarily in a library
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic problems with computer equipment

Preferred

  • Extensive knowledge of art, architecture, and/or design
