During the Second World War over 250 Allied warships from a dozen navies were sent to the bottom by German U-boats. This ground-breaking study provides a detailed analysis of every sinking for which source material survives from both the Allied and the German sides, resulting in detailed treatment of the fate of 110 vessels, with the remainder summarised in an extensive appendix. Uniquely, each entry is built around a specialist translation of the relevant segment of the war diary (log) of the U-boat in question, taken directly from the surviving originals remarkably, this represents the first large-scale publication of the U-boat war diaries in any language. The book offers a wealth of new information, not only with respect to the circumstances of the sinkings from both the Allied and German perspectives, but also to the technical environment in which they lived as well as the fate of the crews. The entries include background details on the vessels concerned and the men involved, with a selection of rare and carefully chosen photos from archives and collections around the world. Each entry is itself a compelling narrative, but is backed with a list of sources consulted, including documents, published works and websites. A decade in the making, this is probably the most important book on the U-boat war to be published for many a year.

Product description

Review

Where the German view of the sinking is available, in 113 cases, the detail is astounding. Also the index is very complete, not only referring to the warships and men that were sunk by these boats, but any crew that were mentioned in the text, rescuing ships, merchantmen involved in both attacks during the event or in rescues, those in the Gazetteer, and so forth. A book well worth hunting for."--Starshell

About the Author

The book is a collaboration between Daniel Morgan, a professional translator from a naval family, and Bruce Taylor, the author of The Battlecruiser HMS Hood: An Illustrated Biography, 1916 1941. A combination of academic research standards and the command of six languages gives this book unique authority in its field.

It was true attack logs written up as the attack happened. Reports after the event often unintentionally add items that did not take place or leave out events which did take place.

I cannot really comment as I have just finished a book on British submarines and this book will be my next read.

As mentioned elsewhere, I study many books in relation to my ongoing research into ships and shipwrecks. Even though a fair proportion of these have been worthy of 5 Stars, few are truly - and I do mean TRULY, outstanding. On this occasion, it was quite apparent that I was holding a work of supreme quality even before I had opened the pages. Having now studied much of the content most carefully, I can say you too will not be disappointed. Certainly not!

With a foreword by eminent historian Professor Jürgen Rohwer, this book is a collaboration between two equally renowned authors who, to put it simply, understand the task in hand and strive to provide the best possible results. How curious that the last time I wrote such glowing comments similar to the above was in 2005 and the author was Bruce Taylor who also co-wrote this work with Daniel Morgan...

In order to provide the prospective reader with a complete understanding of this product, I shall commence with size and scope. The book measures 11¾ in x 10 in (296mm x 255mm) and commences with; Contents, Acknowledgements, Abbreviations, Glossary, Foreword, Introduction (19 pages) and a fascinating six page item headed "Reading the Kriegstagebücher" - which explains both the layout and, therefore, how to understand the very information on which much of the book is based. These are followed by 425 pages of text, Gazetteer (8 pages), Bibliography and an Index. The number of contributors mentioned under Acknowledgements is far too lengthy for reproduction here - except to say they include the finest experts and the most impeccable sources.

The underlying purpose of the book is, as the title suggests, to provide information from both sides of the conflict with regard to those Allied warships sunk by German U Boats during WW2. To this end, the authors have accessed material held by Allied and German sources to provide a detailed analysis of 110 of those 250 subject vessels with the remainder being summarised. The first two vessels included under the former are the aircraft carrier HMS Courageous and the battleship HMS Royal Oak - both of which have been the subjects of several books in their own right!

From a personal viewpoint, having dived the Royal Oak and told her story in writing on several occasions, I have researched that particular ship time and again over many years. I was not, therefore, expecting to find significantly `new' information from a work which might ordinarily expect to be nothing more than an overview of so many ships. The fact that I did find new and very relevant information bodes well for my ongoing further research in future years. In short, this work is not an overview at all.

The entries include wide-ranging details from, as I say, the different perspectives of both sides of the conflict. These include an understanding of the environment in which those sailors lived and worked and the fate of the crews of sunken ships - details often overlooked when searching for technical specifications of all vessels involved coupled with dates and so forth. By using a fairly small font, there is far more information than one might ordinarily expect from a book of this size. This is further supported by the diligent use of carefully selected photographs and diagrams - none of which are allowed to overwhelm the product in any way.

Altogether, this is easily one of the most important works to cross my desk for a very long time and, dare I say, I can only hope for a similar work on those merchant vessels lost by the same means. Please be under no illusions whatsoever. Such is the importance of this outstanding work, I firmly believe many people will now have to reassess their understanding of how certain ships were lost.

It tell some otherwise incomprehensible sequences and attack's methods (and fleeing).
It also refers punctually the launching system and the T5 characteristics (in the good introduction)
...useful.

A record worth having in any navy collection. Very detailed as expected however does not cover all losses to U-boats. It is mainly detailing RN losses. Still found it an invaluable piece of research to have. Good price on kindle too.

5.0 out of 5 stars a home run!!

i bought this book a few weeks back cause i have always been very interested in uboats, fascinated would be a better word, i have probably 50 books on u boats, this book is probably one of the best books i've ever owned, the book is big, coffee table size,it has 450 pages, the first part of the book deals with a history of u boats sinking warships in WW2, then it goes into procedures, an example of this is type of torpedos used, proper procedures on how to initiate a torpedo attack by using the TDC (torpedo data computer) and so forth, then the fun begins!! it has a massive list of warships sunk by u boats in ww2, each ship has a few pages devoted to it,it talks about when the ship was built, a brief history of the ship and when and how it was sunk, who sank it and how did it happen, when the submarine log detailing the incident survived its posted also, very fascinating, so if you like uboats get this book, it is out of this world,a note to modellers out there, nothing in here is good for modelling so don't buy this book for that, the pictures detailing the ships that were sunk are small and in black and white, this is a highly technical book and nothing to do with pictures or modelling so be aware of that before you plunk 70 dollars for it, the book is expensive but worth every penny for us u boat nuts out there.

A well written write up of each attack with both sides reflected where possible.
It is very 'matter of fact' in its write up which suits me but may not suit others. For me its a wonderful book and one I have been after for a while, the courage both sides showed is incredible in such tragic circumstances.
