Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Featuring the debut of Prince's first band -the Revolution, PURPLE RAIN was a concerted effort to court rock audiences. The results were overwhelmingly positive, spawning two number-1 hits When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy. The critics raved over the album while its music dominated the airwaves during 1983 and 1984.
Certified at 13 million units by the RIAA. (2/01)

Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson

This is a gorgeous release. The foil accents on the cover are beautiful, and the poster is pretty cool. The music sounds great too. The 2015 Paisley Park remaster was very well done imo.
At this price, you're not going to get a better edition of a better album. This is a must-own album whether you're a die-hard Prince fan, a casual listener, or just someone who appreciates music in general!
As a black, queer misfit I found myself relating to almost every track on the album. Prince was known for his lewd performances and lyrics, but he can also be introspective and empowering. My favorite tracks lyrically were "Let's Go Crazy", "The Beautiful Ones", "When Doves Cry", "I Would Die For You" "Baby I'm A Star", and "Purple Rain".
Production wise, I was very satisfied on the R&B rock front but there is also some funk, pop, and a dash of drum and bass too. Also impressive were Prince's vocals; he hits high notes, screams, and sings in a husky, sexy voice.
If you are a black queer person or anybody who has felt out of place and you need music that gets you, get this. If you like rock, R&B, funk, and/or pop, get this. Get this and stand in the Purple Rain.
Rest in Purple, Prince. Thanks for the tunes.
Released in the summer of 1984- this album served as both a supplement to the film of the same name and vice versa.
The song craft is brilliant- marrying elements of rock, funk, new wave, r&b, soul and even ambient.
The musicianship is top notch. Prince's prowess on guitar rivals even that of Eddie Van Halen, but he could sing and dance as well as shred AND play keys and drums with equal alacrity. The Revolution (the band) also add their own signature styles as musicians to this record to make it the pinnacle of his releases having been certified "Diamond" with the RIAA.
Standout cuts to me personally were the lesser known songs 'The Beautiful Ones' in which he incorporates a Smokey Robinson falsetto with James Brown style screams over a slow synth grind with lilting piano jabs and the pseudo psychedelic jazz funk number 'Computer Blue' that falls into a melodic guitar solo that wouldn't be out of place in a Beethoven composition.
well worth the time of anyone who loves great music that will never be stale.
