4th Grade Op Art & Symmetrical Rockets

This is a project I get so many compliments on in our building and the kids are always amazed at what they can accomplish.  We begin by discussing Op Art and I teach them how to create the background optical illusion. They color it next with crayolas and sharpies- this is a great lesson on patience!

Once backgrounds are complete they get a smaller rectangle of white paper and I show them how to fold it vertically, drawing only half of their rocket with ebony pencil. Then they fold and rub the paper with something hard (back of scissors work great!) they can hardly believe their eyes when they see their image transferred to the other side and is now symmetrical!

They trace the rocket with sharpie, cut it out and glue onto their background.

4th Grade Lady Liberty

For this project we watched a quick video on the history of the Statue of Liberty. We also looked at the artwork of Peter Max and Romero Britto with a brief introduction to Pop Art.  On various shades of green construction paper (12x18") we learned how to draw a portrait of Lady Liberty step by step and traced with a jumbo black sharpie. Students then used chalk pastels to color and were encouraged to use realistic or unrealistic colors.  We loved the variety and how "multicultural" they looked when finished!

3rd Grade Laurel Burch inspired Cats

After learning about Laurel Burch, we practiced designs and patterns in our sketchbooks. Students picked a color of construction paper (11x17") and used a tracer for just the body outline of the cat. I gave them two options-sitting cat or standing cat.
Next they learned how to draw the cat's face step by step in pencil and added their patterns and designs. After the design was finished they traced over everything in black sharpie.
The following art time was spent learning about using colored pencils, blending, and gradation. Once they had that down they began coloring their cats. Finally, they cut their cats out carefully and glued them on to 12x18" black construction paper.
