B&W photos

[edit]

Hi Djembayz,

We are in process of phasing out topical subcategories of "Black and white photographs" and eventually merge categories such as "Black and white photographs of ships" into "Black and white photographs". As you probably noticed, quite a few images in "Black and white photographs of ships" are not photographs, but photographs of other reproductions (e.g. paintings). Thus, it's much more helpful to categorize images primarily by the subject and features shown rather than by file format or medium.

For ships, most subcategories are done by ship names. For the QLD images, we have categories for most ship names, but they still lack proper parent categories for the type of ship and the flag country.

Once images are categorized by ship name, CatScan, e.g. Template:Catscan gallery and other tools allow to view images in groups. The sample is at Category:Barques.

It might be worth creating subcategories at Category:Ships under sail by the way sails are being set, but I would avoid introducing, e.g. file format into this. As the ship type is generally already defined at the category for the ship name, it might not be worth doing subcategories for that either.

BTW, you might want to try the HotCat and Cat-a-lot tools. Enjoy! --  Docu  at 22:28, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Docu,
Sorting for black and white photographs of square-riggers really does the trick for pulling the contemporary photos of historic ships back in the day. Sure we can't leave Category:Black and white photographs of square-riggers under sail as a useful way of sorting for Age of Sail images?
Thanks for pointing out tools. They are tempting, to be sure, but must take Wikibreak and prepare for the week ahead. If the black-and-white photo category can't be kept, could you move my tagged square-riggers into a subcategory under Ships under sail for me? (I've tried creating a redirect for this).
Djembayz (talk) 22:38, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's tempting to sort them that way, but nothing prevents photographers to use black and white at Tall Ships' Races 2011, especially as finding images by year isn't ideal at Commons ..
Don't worry about the categories, nothing should get lost, but it might take a couple of edits, e.g. [1]. Cat-a-lot allows to sort images in categories quite easily BTW. --  Docu  at 23:04, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Shipwrecks

Please realise that grounded ships are not always wrecked !! --Stunteltje (talk) 08:44, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's why I put "Careening" as a subcategory. Do you see things here that need to be changed? Djembayz (talk) 23:44, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problem with Careening. The reason for my remark was, that you added Category:Grounded ships to Category:Shipwrecks and in my opinion that is not correct. Nog every ship that is grounded becomes a wreck. That is why the grounded ships category has a lot of images and only few categories. --Stunteltje (talk) 05:39, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to have added a non-existent category to an image I uploaded

Hello, Djembayz!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Abdulameer Yousef Habeeb

[edit]

Abdulameer Yousef Habeeb is, indeed, best known for a case that arose from his dubious arrest in Havre, Montana, but is that really a reason to add Category:Havre, Montana to a photo of him, as you did at [2] and [3]? Neither picture was taken in Havre, nor is he by any means from Havre. - Jmabel ! talk 04:09, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Remove logos of comp.?

[edit]

Hallo Djembayz, why did you remove the cat here? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 17:53, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And here2 you removed Category:Logos of companies associated with mass media but it is not included via the added category "Category:Television logos". Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 17:54, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Saibo, come to think of it, CBS Radio would make it mass media; so that could go back on.
I've been trying to diffuse the "Logos of companies" as per the request on the page, and I see that Cartoon Network is in the "Television logos" category. If you want to make a "Cartoon Network logos" category, like the "Microsoft logos" category, that's fine with me; I want to stick with diffusing the larger "Logos of companies" for now rather than stopping to make "Logo" categories for every individual company and business. Djembayz (talk) 01:06, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hallo Djembayz, thanks for your reply. I think you did not understand what I mean (maybe due to my poor wording). The CBS logo is obviously a "logo of companies associated with mass media", isn't it? But Category:Television logos is not in a "company" category. So the CBS logo lost its "company" categorization - it is not anymore a logo of a company. Category:Television logos is probably not in Category:Logos of companies associated with mass media but instead in Category:Logos associated with mass media since it could also include logos by organizations which are not companies. Or logos of tv programmes/shows (not sure if they would count as a logo of a company). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:19, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
CBS is a TV network, which needs its own category. TV networks are companies or non-profits. It also has a radio network. TV channels are a subset of television networks in the US; but not necessarily so in other countries.
A "media organization" takes money to run, by definition, so it is a company / non profit / combination of both / and could even be a government agency.
The term "associated with mass media" makes a lot of sense, because you don't need to specify network, channel, company, or non-profit; or print, internet, radio, etc. A topic like the "Cartoon Network" vs. other media organizations isn't going to break down neatly into hierarchical categories, because there are too many factors / facets at work. Thus being vague, with terms like "associated with" enables us to create imprecise hierarchies instead of using a faceted classification system. Djembayz (talk) 01:44, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, I can make media without being a company. Think e.g. of small (internet) radio stations. However, fact is, that Television logos is not in a "company" category. So these logos are about television - not necessarily about companies. So please stop doing such changes for now and prepare to revert your already done changes when we are finished discussing here. --Saibo (Δ) 03:16, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy to let you and ŠJů work out how to categorize company logos and television-related items for now as you appear to have the patience for this. There are many things which are incorporated which are more specific than "companies," and in the long run, I don't think you'll want to put "Company logos" on all of them. Also, this will differ between countries. If, however, you decide to put the "company logos" category on every single thing that's incorporated, I'll leave that choice to you. I am moving on to other topics. Djembayz (talk) 03:34, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you added Category:Logos of the Czech Republic and removed Category:Logos of companies from the logo of the Prague Airport company. "Logos of the Czech Republic" isn't a subcategory of "Logos of companies", that's why adding of "Logos of the Czech Republic" cannot be a reason for removing of "Logos of companies". Please, be more level-headed when categorizing. A diffusing of crowded categories should be made through more precise categorizing, not through removal categorization. --ŠJů (talk) 02:15, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wanted someone who reads Czech to take a look, thanks. In that case, wouldn't "Category:Logos of airports" be better? Djembayz (talk) 02:20, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
