HISTORICAL CLIMATE AGREEMENT Saturday, December 12th 2015 will be celebrated as the moment the global campaign against climate change began in earnest. It is hoped that the Paris agreement will now unleash up to $30 trillion of new investment in green technologies, sending a jolt of acceleration through the world’s low carbon economies. The Sustainable Innovation Forum, just a short hop from the climate negotiations, gathered international business leaders to unveil the powerful new ideas required to drive this investment forward.

THE LARGEST BUSINESS SIDE EVENT AT COP21 From the latest advances in electric motoring and battery swap technologies, to plant based meat, to locking carbon in the earth- the 6th annual Sustainable Innovation Forum unpacked the business solutions required to build a low carbon future. Recognised as the largest business-focused event held during the COP21 Paris Climate Summit, SIF highlighted the multi-trillion dollar business opportunities available in accelerating the low carbon economy. The two day event at the iconic Stade de France welcomed more than 1,300 delegates from countries all over the world to debate the way in which businesses, investors, city leaders and NGOs can work together to build cross-sector partnerships to unlock green economy opportunities.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS Buoyantly-optimistic UN Environment Programme executive director Achim Steiner informed his audience: “This forum is not only the future - it is bringing the future right into the present.” “The market for low-carbon technologies and innovations is not some future concept, it is thriving today, and offers huge potential for those who would capitalise on it.” “We are already seeing the enormous opportunities for business of an inclusive green economy. We need look no further than the power sector, where last year half of all new infrastructure investments – some $270 billion – were in renewables.” Enthused by the commitments tabled at the nearby COP, he added: “Virtually every country on this planet now has a national climate change strategy - this has changed the entire ball game - these new commitments now cover over 90 per cent of the world’s emissions.” The conference vision was of an angstfree future - an appeal to a transformation of the world economy in every facet where policy makers and investors mingled with private sector innovators of a carbon free world. High level attendees included President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, a nation powered by 100 per cent

renewable energy, US Energy Secretary and nuclear physicist Dr Ernest Moniz, Mayors of the some of the world’s most green progressive cities Bristol and Adelaide, corporate leaders from BMW and Coca-Cola, the pilots of the Solar Impulse, and many more. While in the deliberate world of international consensus building nations shift incrementally, butting together like tectonic plates, here at the Stade de France the zeal of business to create change and drive sustainable innovation was irresistible. This momentum is reflected in a new study by UNEP and the European Patent Office, stating that the number of climate change mitigation technologies

has increased five fold between 1995 and 2011. In fact, low-carbon inventions are being realised at a faster rate than other technologies, representing nearly 6% of all of the world’s inventions. UK Foreign Secretary’s special advisor for climate change, Sir David King, revealed that the low carbon economy is now the fastest growing sector in the UK - employing 460,000 people and turning over £50 billion. “But that’s just a taster,” he told the conference with breezy confidence. Journalists from across the planet, including Reuters, the New Yorker, the BBC and Forbes were amongst those given a chance to feast on their own ‘taster’ - the Impossible Burger. The juicy prospect was made still more tantalising by the fact that its very convincing ‘meat’ patty, appearing to ooze with red juices, was entirely plant-based. The tasty takeaway was created via the development of an alternative source of the heme molecule that ‘opens up’ when heated and gives cooked meats their distinctive flavour. Instead of using beef, outspoken Stanford University Professor Pat O. Brown, has found the same molecule lurking in the nodules of soya plants.

His concept of beating the farming industry at its own game has so convinced Google that this year they offered a startling £300 million to buy his three-year-old company, Impossible Foods.

3 BMW i3 USED TO TRANSPORT DIPLOMATS TO SIF15 SAVED A THIRD OF A TON OF CO2 EMISSIONS lution problems - a speedy electric battery swap, that powers electric scooters available at 100 outlets around the city. 140 batteries are already being swapped every day just a few months into the embryonic project. “This could be the beginning of something huge, yes,” he stated as the firm began outlining its next staging post, a roll out in Amsterdam. Scandinavian interests were also well represented by Norwegian entrepreneurs Carbon Wealth, who unveiled their new ‘Skymining’ concept - created by founder Karl Pendragon. The firm plans to rejuvenate abandoned plots of poor quality land , as well as generating energy and pro-

viding a cheap store of carbon underground.

a scientific project to grow the same grass for use in power stations.

The business centres around a plant called elephant grass, which grows at a rate of up to four metres in 100 days in Africa.

Mr Pendragon told delegates that amongst the reasons for turning to the product is that it is grown on marginal land in Africa, where land could be leased to provide much needed cash whilst helping to restore nutrient-depleted soils.

It is one of the world’s most efficient ‘carbon pumps’ and stores up to 30 per cent of its carbon around its roots. After growing it in volume, the company has patented a unique process to generate energy by harvesting the plant above ground and processing it into a “carbon negative” fuel. Their idea is already stimulating ripples of interest, including with the UK government that announced in August that it would spend £1.8 million on

The Forum also hosted global financial organisations demonstrating their commitment to low carbon investment opportunities. Representatives included some of the world’s largest development banks, as well as smaller, more agile competitors, like the Singapore-based Climate Resource Exchange (CRX), a global exchange focused on environmental markets. UK-based Carbon Tracker Initiative - a financial think tank aiming to reset the way markets understand the risks of climate change - also offered their financial perspective. Their success may at least in part be judged by the recent actions of Bank of England governor Mark Carney who has appointed US media billionaire Michael Bloomberg to head a new task force aimed at helping investors judge how companies are managing the risks that global warming poses to businesses. Headline sponsors BMW Group proudly parked their BMWi3 in the main exhibition, an emission free vehicle created using the maximum amount of sustainable and recyclable materials. Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the BMW Group Board of Management, said: “When it comes to the big chal-

lenges of the future, we have to take a systematic approach – because single companies will not be able to manage the digitalisation and decarbonisation of mobility alone. It will take networks and partnerships. The Sustainable Innovation Forum provides an ideal platform for sharing ideas within a high profile network and developing new ways to shape the future together.” Meanwhile from the kitchen another corporate giant The Coca- Cola Group served the assembled guests with a meal of ‘rescued’ food. Businesses were not the only ones supporting the vision for a low carbon economy. Icelandic President Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson received warm applause after joking about the success of his country in becoming powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, com-

menting: “If this is what a ridiculously small country can do - think of what the world’s leading powers can achieve in the next 20 years.” Whilst revealing his country’s journey to 100 per cent renewable power was “full of mistakes,” he high-

lighted that major aluminium producers Rio Tinto and Alcoa now actively site smelters in Iceland to take advantage of its geothermal energy resource, as “the fact that their products are being produced by renewable energy puts them in a far stronger position than if it was produced by fossil fuels.” Conference organiser Nick Henry, the CEO of Climate Action, who works relentlessly to build partnerships between business, government and public bodies, summed up the two day gathering: “Climate change not only presents the single largest threat to mankind, it also creates the greatest economic opportunity since the industrial revolution. Trillions of dollars will be spent in the next decades to develop a global green economy that creates long-term energy, food and water security and green jobs in the process”.
