Back soon (promise)

I wanted to be sure to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and the happiest start to the new year. As many of you know, I’ve been pretty busy (understatement) posting over at Merrier Shopping, home of my 60-day blog ambassadorship. The good news is I plan to be back over here on my site with regularity beginning January 3 of the new year. Until then, I’ll be wrapping up 2010 and spending time with my family including the five-year old who is currently attached begging to bake cookies. Thanks so much for your support in 2010 whether it be purchasing something from my etsy shop, commenting on my blog, e-mailing me the nicest of letters or just hanging out. I appreciate the support and kindness more than I can say. You most certainly do add color to my world.

A little tale of yarn

This past weekend, I actually cleaned out and organized my studio. The art, craft, sewing, etc. supplies were getting way out of control. Here’s evidence. I admit I have never knitted, crocheted, spun or weaved or done anything with yarn in the past five ten twenty years. So why does one have mountains of yarn? I think it’s the colors and the textures that get me. I fantasy about knitting mittens…surely some day I will be a mitten knitter. Until then, I forced myself to condense my stash to what could fit in this metal bin. Notice it’s squeezed in pretty tight. That self is one tricky gal. You can only imagine how the rest of the studio clean out went. I will say things are looking better than before. And if you happen to spot me in Michaels or some other craft or sewing store, please order me to drop the basket and go home immediately.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation: A Pictorial

In the Bahamas loving the color combinations.

On a girls weekend in Columbus with Chicago and serious shopping.

Appreciating food that looks and tastes like summer.

Sorting one billion legos by color (I’m not even kidding.)

Painting winterish snowpeople when the temps went into the 90s.

In and out of pools watching my three strengthen their swimming skills.

Traveling to Hogwarts at Universal Studios (seriously amazing….this needs its own post.)

At the beach enjoying the sand and the waves.

Working on my new website with Christine and Anna. It’s finally up! (Thanks ladies!)

So there in a nutshell, are some of the highlights of my summer.  School starts this week. I never planned on such a long hiatus from blogging, but summer got in the way. (I’m blaming summer.) I’m back now…really…and hopefully, all posts will not take quite as long as this one, once I learn how things work over here at WordPress. Let me know what you think of the new look. Thanks again Christine! I’m totally loving it.

A view from the deck

This is not a deer farm, but rather my urban backyard. On any given day of the week we can peer out the windows and see our friends frolicking…eating from bird feeders, munching on shrubbery and flowers without a care in the world. Deer like it here and feel very, very comfortable. They don’t seem to care that this is not suburbia or a place where there should be large quantities of wildlife (sorry Dad.) And me? I’m officially sick after being in denial throughout the weekend. I’m afraid it’s payback time. My body is not happy about my refusal to pass on parties and other Halloween festivities when I knew better. Really I did. So here I am, showing you pictures of female deer rather than an interesting project. Now, I need to doze…not eight. (sorry…toomuchsinusmedicine confusing bad deer joke.) Off to rest.

why can’t i resist?

Every time I go here this (see above) happens. Today I muttered to myself that I would steer clear of those tempting bottles. I’d get what I needed and get back out. The curve ball was that I had my 10-year old with me. Cara said she’d be looking at “it” while I was getting the things on my list. Well after I found the list items, I walked over to tell Cara I was ready to go…and I tried not to look, but I saw them out of the corner of my eye…the colors…the bottles…the clever names…they whispered hello…and yes, they got me. I had to try this one and that one…and our groceries are melting in the car…and I’m not here to buy nail polish in the first place..and this happens every single time……but maybe just one little bottle?

After much discussion, Cara and I agreed that we needed “Mermaid to Order.” Besides loving the name, the color reminds us of swimming pools, the ocean, and sunny blue summer skies. How could we not buy a bottle with all of that?
Maybe next time I’ll make it out without another color. maybe…

This is what you look like when you’re mad

I’m not exactly sure what triggered my memory of this little gal. Maybe it was the latest kid temper tantrum or it could have been me having a grouchy day. Regardless, I remembered “mad doll”, proceeded up to the attic and dug her out of a box of saved memories. My grandma gave me this figurine back when I was five which was sometime in the mid 70’s. Apparently, I was going through a stage of “mad-ness.” Grandma G wanted me to see what I looked like. She wanted me to look at this crazy mad doll and laugh instead. I sure wish I knew Grandma G today because that lady had to have a great sense of humor plus she was a crafty genius (I definitely remember that.)

I tried to track down evidence of me needing a mad doll back when I was supposedly going through this little growing phase, but couldn’t find any. Just look at this angel with a matching cake nonetheless…could she possibly have a temper? naaaah, I didn’t think so either (if anything maybe she was “mad” about the curtains? guessing.)

So Maddoll is out of the box and now has a permanent home in my office for a quick referral in case anybody around here “forgets what they look like.” My kids are both amused and “freaked out” by her which I think is exactly the point. I wish I would have remembered her sooner. Nothing like a visual. :0 (

Snow days

Today everybody is home from school for the second day in a row due to snow, freezing rain and everything in between. My peeps have been having a fabulous time playing outside in all of it…building snow sculptures and forts, sledding and breaking into the occasional snowball fight. Me? Well, I’m more of the “how about I bake cookies and keep the hot cocoa warm for when you decide to finally come in” kind-of-mom. Nothing wrong with that right? ; )

A virtual Christmas card from us to you…

open to…

Finally, I got all of the printed versions in the mail yesterday. I still have a few hand delivers that are awaiting a tray of cookies to go with. This card idea came to me after finding yet another vintage Scrabble game (favorite) at a holiday flea market. At home, as I stared at and moved around those gorgeous wooden letters, I saw XMAS. When I discovered that I could fit MERRY XMAS on the wood rack, I completely geeked out and went at it with full force. Using a Photoshop trick or two, I turned our family into scrabble tiles adding a point value to correspond to ages. (okay one age is slightly questionable…I wanted to see who was paying attention ; )

With several design projects happily at the printer, cards mailed and presents wrapped, I’ve officially put myself on vacation. My hubbie and I purchased a rug pad for my office rug, installed badly needed new blinds and completed little odd ball fixes around the house that have been crying out for attention for many, many months. Projects that give me tremendous JOY now that they are done. Me and my little cooks are planning to heat up the kitchen with cookies and a feast for Thursday. We have family coming into town for Christmas day and several days after so we’re looking forward to entertaining and enjoying our time together.

I’m taking some time away from here, but I’ll be back after the new year. ‘Til then happy, safe and cozy holidays to you along with lots of PEACE, HOPE, LOVE and JOY.
