Giddyup!

For the 2nd time in my life, I've bought a piece of the action of someone's upcoming WSOP event. Hopefully, the returns are greater this time than last time. By that, I mean any return would be greater than it was last time.

Okay, I only bought 2% of the action for 1% of the gross, so it's more of a pony than a horse. But I believe in this player's skill.

Fingers crossed for lots of "nut nut" held by my horse.

Magic in the Number Ocho

Day 6 - Jamal Sawaqdeh coming in with 888,000 chips.

You go, you crazy sumbitch, you go!

The celebrations in Blackhawk should be starting just...about...now.

I'm finally sold on the 90 day break between getting to the final table and playing it out, if only for the idea that Jamal can be coming home a conquering hero for a few months, which I find kinda cool.

Headed to Nantucket tomorrow morning, and I may actually try to get some poker in today, since I've not played since Tuesday, and won't be back until next Tuesday....

Will He Be the Conquering Hero?

I've been tracking Jamal, Blackhawk's golden boy, through the first four days of the main event. Went to bed early-ish last night, and didn't know whether or not he'd still be around, but BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Yup. Going into Day 5, Jamal's sitting 24th in chips, at just a bit under 1.3 million. Last I'd seen he was at about 300k, so the poker gods over yesterday evening and last night were truly most kind to his stack.

Oddly enough, going back through the live reporting, I have yet to find any mention of Jamal. This would appear to be a very good thing, as he is apparently flying way under the radar. Keep it up, and GO GO GO!

Why Do Hookers Love the 2008 Main Event?

....perhaps more than any other year?

That's easy. The Blogfather's made it to the mobnies. Yup, everyone's favorite poker midget widget rode his short stack to the cash, and he's still riding it hard. Hookers in the IP Geisha Bar are already lining up to buy second homes. By Saturday, at least one or two will be at the Maserati dealership.

Going into Day 4, Iggy's still on a shortish but growing stack, but would he really want it any different? Anyway, he's still got plenty of play left, and a great story is brewing. Go go go, Iggy, go go go!

Jamal, whom I mentioned yesterday, is also still alive, and with 201,000 chips, he's actually in fairly decent shape. Considering he's completely free-rolling the Main Event, it's all gravy. Oddly enough, his chip count wasn't even listed at the end of play last night, but then, no one knows him. They will soon -- Jamal's a great ambassador for Blackhawk poker, even if the $5 max betting limit pretty much pisses away all the goodwill.... Go go go, Jamal, go go go!

In other news, I had my informal hang with The New Ben Franklins last night, and we're getting together to jam on Saturday. Got a real good vibe about the guys, and we seem to have common ground, musically and otherwise. High hopes for this bunch -- they made some interesting music back in the day, and I would like to be part of their re-entry into the Denver music scene. However, the proof is in being able to actually play *together*, so much more to be learned tomorrow.

UPDATE: Sad to say, Iggy's out -- fought hard, and I think he even moved up one payout slot. But it's early in the day, so the Spearmint Rhino's getting ready for his grand entrance. Jamal, on the other hand, had nearly doubled up today, and was firmly in mid-pack, but took a hit and is now short (250k) with 363 remaining...

Go Go Go!!!

Go, to you, Iggy -- pump those lil' legs deep into the mad poker mobnies!

And go, to you, Jamal -- represent the Colorado mountain casinos well. Jamal, the ultimate lucksack, who wins his main event buy-in via a drawing at the Gilpin, and who's already won one bad beat jackpot worth near $100k this year. You're a damn good player nonetheless, and every donk here in the Rockies is railing you. Take it down. Preferably HU versus Iggy.

Maybe Phil Hellmuth will shave his scalp again. Or better, yet, clean up the cheaters at Ultimate Fraud.

Now that would blow ESPN's mind, eh?

Iggy's at about 85k, and Jamal's at 152k.

No news on the poker front for me any time soon.

Meeting a dude about a band tonight. If I don't get river three-outed by cruel band fate, I may have just finally found my next project -- a reforming band that was a pretty cool part of Denver's scene back in the 90s, and a sort of blend of britpop and alt-country. Cool.

And They're Off....

Twas' the night before Main Event
and all through the Rio
Not a degen was stirring,
not even an Eskimo...

Oh fuck it, I can't even remember the Night Before Christmas, much less riff on it.

On Lucko and LJ and Iggy and Pauly
On Loretta8 and every other motherlovin' blogger in donkament paradise.

Good luck you crazies, may one of you take it down. And a lil' special wish to the blogger I've got the tiniest piece imaginable of....take. it. down.

Mostly, remember how special an experience this is, at the vast majority of us will never ever ever be in the Amazon room for the Main Event. Have fun.

Vega$ Trip Report - Part 4 (Denoument)

Monday, Monday...bring on the mamas and the papas, as long as they gots chips, I say.

The last day our our Vega$ trip was, in some ways, the best. Certainly the most relaxing, and certainly the most profitable. The day started with the Good Doctor Mondo and I back down at the Lazy River for a few more orbits 'round the pool, where I fulfilled my duties as a human floatation device. I can't get over that pool...hope it's open in December. Actually, my only critique of MGM Grand at all is, their pool opens at 8 or 9am, yet the Lazy River doesn't open until 10. WTF is up with that?

Anyway, we chilled down there for a couple of hours, and got upstairs just in time to clean up before extended noon checkout. I'd been hoping to get one more session of 1/2NL in, of a sorta relaxed variety, but I was not prepared for how busy their room was at that time of the day on a Monday.

After waiting my turn on the wait list, I sat down at table 8, and found an interested bunch. One player had about $800 behind, another had about $500, and there were several of what struck me to be old tighties at the table. I pretty much decided to stay out of most action for the first couple of orbits, and found the big stacks not really playing any hands, either. I'm thinking they picked up most of their chips on one or two huge hands.

I wish I could say there were truly interesting hands. There was the AK I bumped up PF, late position smooth called, raised my c-bet on an raggy board, and I check folded an ugly turn that brought a flush. I actually put her on a high PP at that point. She shoved the turn, and the laydown wasn't really *that* tough. It was her first orbit, and reading her soul, she struck me as a solid player.

There was one player who would consistently pay my ass off. If he had an A, he just could not get away from it, and would raise every PF and c-bet every flop, no matter his kicker, or how bad the board was to his hand. I think over half my profits that day came from him --- twice when he paid off my flopped sets, and once when he folded to a river bet. Now I saw where the two big stacks got their chips. Details are fuzzy now.

Eventually, Mr $800 would come and go from the table and miss a lot of hands. The other good stack left. One of the older guys was constantly complaining and seat-changing, until he left when a new table opened. Pretty typical stuff, but that left me as the only truly sizable stack actually playing at the table, for the most part, and I think I used it well, at one point getting up to about $600 in my short session. By the time I had to cash out to catch the airport shuttle, I was up almost two buy-ins, for my most successful 1/2 stint of the trip. Fuck short sample sizes, I'll take a 85bb/hour rate any day of the week, and twice on Sundays. My only wish is that I had another hour or two to play there, but it was time to come back to Colorado where I remain, donkin' in the Rockies.

To all of you out there this weekend, may your stacks be big.

Best of luck to all you bloggers playing the Caesar's Mega Stack today.

And a special note to F-Train, who's not only out covering the WSOP for PokerNews, he's made it to day 2 of Event 26 - $1,500 Razz with a slightly above average chipstack:

Go go go, you furious lil' prarie dog, you!

Hit and Run

And no, I'm not talking about scooping a large 4-way pot and then fleeing the table. Nor am I talking about recent Britney driving escapades. Rather, today's post is very short...

Tomorrow, the 2008 World Series of Poker begins. Of course, you already know that, unless you live under a rock, or have come no closer to a poker table than FLDS grandmother has ever been.

54 events, gobs of pros and spectators, and more news than you can shake a Weekly World at.

But have no fear...there's really only one place you need to go for all the best stories, best blogging, and coolest features for the month. Once again, Dr. Pauly leads the way:

Where are you getting your news from this year?

At this point, I don't know whether the Good Doctor Mondo and I will make it over to the Rio to live rail any of the events on our trip. Docket's getting full. In fact, I'm trying to work two tourneys into the schedule, and not sure if I can work it when I consider the poker rate hours we gotta put in, too. We'll see.

Oh yeah, Ultimate Bet's finally come out with a statement on what they're going to do in the aftermath of the long running superuser scam. You can find a copy of the e-mail they sent to users here (Thanks, Falstaff!). I'll try to have some comments on it later tonight or tomorrow. That said, I'm having a hard time seeing a way for this to be anything other than a lose/lose for Ultimate Bet.

Bodog Main Event Satellites

Bodog's starting to run a series of satellites to a final Main Event qualifier. The best part is, it's only five PPs to enter each one. They're running four times a day, once every six hours. Each one awards seats in the final to the top 25 players.

So far, I've played two, each with something like 1900-2000 runners. And so far, I've finished 53rd and...yup, tonight...28th. So sick, but it's my own fault for earlier on misclicking a call of 5,000k with 82o. That 5k may have been the fold equity I needed (when I went out, I was actually about 20th in chips).

Anyway, if you play at Bodog, it behooves to you jump into a couple of these things. They are soft, and cheap. If you qualify, the final details follow:

Final Tournament
The Final Tournament, the "WSOP* Seat Giveaway Finale", will be hosted on Saturday, June 7th at 5:05pm ET. If every qualifier decides to participate, this tournament will have a maximum of 3100 entries. Since players need to qualify their way into this tournament, there will be $0 + $0 buy-in.

The first place finisher of this "WSOP* Seat Giveaway Finale" will win the grand prize of a $12,000 Main Event Prize Package as a member of Team Bodog in the 2008 WSOP. Additional prizing will be distributed as such: 2nd to 5th win T$270 in order to buy-into a "Main Event Semifinal" and 6th to 10th will win T$109 in order to buy-into Bodog's $100,000 Guaranteed Tournament.

2008 WSOP* Seat Giveaway Freeroll Tournament Terms and Conditions

WSOP* Seat Giveaway Finale
Date: Saturday, June 7th
Time: 5:05pm ET
Players: 3100 max (25 players per Qualifier X 4 Qualifiers per Day X 31 Days)
Buy-In: Freeroll – Top 25 players in each WSOP* Seat Giveaway Qualifier will be invited to play in this finale

2nd to 5th- T$270 in order to buy into a Main Event Semifinal

Really, I can't find a better free way to win a chance at a main event seat. Now, if I can just finish a wee bit higher in the qualifier...

If Wichita is for Linemen...

...then Council Bluffs can only be for self-flagellation.

I entered Year of the Blogger with the stated goal of playing one of the $1500 NLHE events at this year's WSOP. In fact, given the emerging details of this summer's McAwesome WPBT Summer Classic 2007 (thanks, Falstaff!), I had everything laid out just dandy. Hit Vega$ for the WPBT, play WSOP Event #15, and sweat the Good Doctor Mondo in the $1000 Ladies event.

But alas, once a hamster gets on a wheel, you just never know what's going to happen. On a slow morning at work I read a thread over on 2+2 (which I can't link to at the moment), and everything changed in an instant. I went into this year willing to take $1.5k off my non-poker bankroll just to give it one shot. The way I figure it, my proper poker bankroll won't get enough play to actually build a buy-in this year, but I'm feeling good about my tourney game, and given good non-poker fortune the last couple of years, I can afford the beat.

That said, I'm not stoopid. Okay. Maybe I am. But I'm not unwise. Okay. Maybe I am. But I'm not unwilling to mitigate a risk, even if I'm foolish enough to take one in the first place. There we go. That nailed it. It hit me in the face like folding QQ pre-flop to a 3rd raised hammer. I may be willing to dump $1.5k tilting at windmills, but if I can spend that on three shots at the sterling silver ring, rather than one shot at the brass ring (or WSOP bracelet, as the case may be), why not take it? That is, because given time considerations, I'm looking at a $300 event and two $500 events, not even the circuit main event, because...well...because that's still a $5k buy-in, and I have to be back at work on the day it starts, anyway.

This means no WSOP for Mondo, though, if I don't make a serious cash whilst playing in the amber waves of grain. It also means no WPBT Summer Classic 2007 , since if I busto in Iowa, I won't be going to Vega$ this summer. The Good Doctor Mondo and I would wait for the Winter Classic instead, now that we've gotten quite used to subzero weather on the high plains.

Anyway, what few readers this blog has...I'm interested in your thoughts on this. Is Council Bluffs a +EV versus the WSOP? I know the weather is massively -EV, and there will be no drunken Pai-Gow at the Horseshoe for me this trip. It should be the softest circuit of all, given that the big rollers will be at the World Poker Open (Borgata) at the time and because....well...because it's freakin' Council Bluffs, Iowa.

And I say that meaning no disrespect to Iowans, or even those across the river in Nebraska, because I've been through there, and it's far far far prettier than the bare soul torturous landscape I spent five years in, in Cheyenne, WY. Yup.

As a side note, I seem to be pushing back half my 2007 goals with this decision, and not playing ring NLHE at all, but am finally starting to find success at STTs, and enjoying the pursuit. Still taking a few too many beats and most of my cashes are 3rds and 2nds, but I'm not losing any bankroll yet, having moved up to $11+1. Maybe a new goal?

Then again, I may just bag the whole thing until I can find a circuit event that's in a nice place, at a time of the year when the Good Doctor can come with, and ratchet up my live tourney stakes more slowly...
