The film explores the effect of the movement of free and open parties that have emerged in São Paulo, South America’s largest metropolis. Independent groups of diverse musical interests have been promoting a common idea of parties that can help locals residents can connect socially and enjoy areas of the city that have become neglected in the era of development.
The documentary includes intimate scenes of parties that have taken place in abandoned parks, occupied buildings, highways, tunnels and marginalized areas of the city. Through a critical perspective, it suggests that these parties and the philosophy they embody have created a rejuvenising effect on the city - socially, politically, attitudinally and spacially. The film presents the perspective of the key collectives instrumental in promoting these parties such as Voodoohop, Metanol FM, Free Beats, Venga Venga and Capslock, and was created by a unique team of three filmmakers – a New Zealand semiotician with a Brazilian photographer and a visual artist.
