Producer Gordon Hollingshead, who became head of Warner Bros. short films department in 1925, won more than a dozen Oscars in his career.
Hollingshead gained most of his fame in motion pictures for his patriotic short subjects on events in American history.
He began his film career in 1914 as a part-time actor with the old Thanhauser Studio in New Rochelle, N.Y. After World World I, in which he served as a Signal Corps photographer, Hollingshead was employed by Warner Bros. as an assistant director on films starring John Barrymore. He assisted in making eight Barrymore pictures.
He was also assistant director on "The Jazz Singer," the trailblazer of all talking pictures. He was put in charge of the newly created short subjects department at the studio in 1938.
