Systemic mastocytosis (or systemic mast cell disease) is caused by infiltration of clonally derived mast cells into different tissues. Classically, this leads to hematologic, cutaneous, and gastrointestinal symptoms, which vary in severity with subtype and aggressiveness of the underlying disease.
Indolent systemic mastocytosis is the most common form of systemic mastocytosis and typically has a good prognosis. However, it can progress to more advanced disease, which comes with its own host of complications. Appropriate management of stable disease can help improve quality of life and prevent progression.
