From
Shirley Sin (Library Administration)
Our regular users
will have noticed the extensive renovation works in progress over the summer
months. These have been undertaken mostly in the Main Library to improve our
services and to alleviate an acute shortage of space. Some projects have
already been completed. Others unfortunately will take longer to finish due to
the scale and complexity of the work involved.
Projects
completed include alterations to the Circulation Department, the relocation of
the Server Room to more spacious accommodation on the 2/F for our expanding
collection of servers, the installation of compact shelving in the Special
Collections stack area, the upgrading of the Dental Library's Multi-Media Room
into a Knowledge Navigation Centre, and the renovation of temporary off-site
storage in the Pauline Chan Building for the Medical Library to release space
for an additional reading room on the mezzanine floor.
Renovation work
that was started during the summer to upgrade the Library Instruction Room into
a multi-purpose room with state-of-the-art IT facilities, is now close to
completion. Ceiling and light fittings in the public areas on the same floor
have also been upgraded.
Work also started
during the summer on extensive cyclical redecoration of the Old Wing, now 38
years old. As a series of building and E & M works, such as patching up and
repainting walls, ceiling and windows, recarpeting, drainage, waterproofing,
air-conditioning, lighting, and fire safety installation have to be done on all
six floors, the entire project will have to continue for some time, with the
last phase scheduled for completion in January 2001. The Fung Ping Shan Library
Office has had to be temporarily relocated to the Old Wing 1/F while awaiting
the completion of the 5/F renovations.
We regret the
inconvenience our premises works have been causing and thank you all for your
patience and understanding.

From Lucinda Wong (Circulation Librarian)
Now is the time of year once again when the Circulation Department
receives
an influx of requests to put materials on reserve for students. To avoid the
inevitable logjam at the beginning of the term, academic staff are urged to
send in their reserve requests well in advance to allow sufficient time for
processing. Apart from sending in request forms or reading lists, staff members
are encouraged to make use of the <Online Reserve Materials Request Form>
under <Reserve Materials> on the Libraries
homepage at:
http://www.hku.hk/lib/LibInfo/RBR/240297a.htm
The online request form is transmitted by e-mail and is the fastest and
most convenient way of submitting reserve requests.
Academic staff are also encouraged to make good use of the Electronic Reserves Service which is
available as a supplemental access point to traditional reserves. High demand
materials such as lecture notes, assignments, tests and results, tutorial
solutions, etc. are digitized to provide 24-hour Web access within the
University of Hong Kong community. Because of copyright concerns, such reserve
materials are presently restricted to those written by academics of the
University of Hong Kong or those which are not under any copyright. The
E-Reserve system is designed to interact with the online catalogue via the web
while E-Reserves can be searched for by course number, course name, or
professor's name. A hard copy can be printed out if desired. Such fast and
convenient access to reserve materials greatly benefits students as well as the
staff concerned.
For enquiries about reserve materials and electronic reserves, please
contact Lucinda: Tel. 2859 7009, Fax 2517 4615, or E-mail [email protected]
From July -
September 2000, a total of five library courses, six full-day postgraduate
workshops, and 43 orientation sessions were arranged and a further 15 user education
courses held at the request of various faculties. New students were introduced
to the services and facilities of the Main Library through an orientation
programme from 24 August - 1 September.
Library courses
on the on-line public access catalogue and library research techniques, and
Full-day Postgraduate Workshops are arranged throughout the year.

From Iris Chan (Special Collections
Librarian)
To relieve the over-crowded conditions of the Special Collections,
280 bays of compact storage were installed in the open stack area in June 2000
replacing 160 bays of regular steel bookshelves. The non-governmental serials
were re-arranged and the additional space gained will be used to accommodate
the United Nations Depository Collection.
Commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Basic Law, the Special
Collections is holding an exhibition on the theme The
Basic
Law - Ten Years On from 18 September
- 16 October 2000.
A newly acquired database, HSBC
Broking Data Cards on CD, was
mounted on the CD workstation in the Special Collections area. This is a
comprehensive database on listed public companies in the Hong Kong SAR. It
contains archived information on a companys history, its latest five years'
financial data, performance ratios, share prices and charts, as well as recent
news updates.
From Irene Fung (Dental Librarian)
The opening hours of the Dental Library have been revised for a
trial period of six months from 4 September 2000 - 3 March 2001. Library usage
will be monitored to assess whether the extended hours should be continued. The
new hours are as follows:
Monday V Friday 9.00
a.m. V 10.00 p.m.
Saturday 9.00
a.m. V 6.00 p.m.
Sunday Closed
During the summer, almost 4,000 volumes of less frequently used reference,
DX and audio-visual materials were transferred to off-site storage. This move
has released much-needed accommodation for newly acquired materials.
The library embarked on several new projects in July and August.
These included adding our current journal subscriptions listing and the Facultys Community Health Project titles to the library web page. Progress
was also made on updating the Faculty Publications Database which allows
retrieval of research publications data of both the Dental Faculty and the
Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences dating back to 1990.
Orientation tours were organised for MSc(Audiology), BSc(SHS), BDS,
CDSA and DTTC year 1 and year 2 students during early September. A library
session highlighting our HKU electronic library system and various new
developments was also given to a group of dental students from the National
University of Singapore who participated in the HKU-NUS Dental Student Exchange
Programme 2000.
Once again, the Dental Library supported the Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery teaching programme through arrangements for BDS IV students to work on
the alveolar surgery computer-assisted learning programs in the library.
From Mimi Yeung (Education Librarian)
Starting from the
beginning of term on 11 September 2000, the Education Library extended its
opening hours to 9:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday on a trial basis until 9 June
2001. The opening hours are now as follows:
Monday V Friday 9.00
a.m. V 9.00 p.m.
Saturday 9.00
a.m. V 7.00 p.m.
Sunday Closed
We encourage
students attending evening courses to make full use of the library facilities
during these extended hours.
A reorganisation
of the periodicals collection was carried out earlier this year. Past practice
had been to shelve journal issues alphabetically by title. To maintain
consistency with the journal issues shelved in the Main Library and to
facilitate user access, the entire collection in the Education Library was
catalogued and reshelved according to call number. All cataloguing and holdings
data have now been retrospectively input into the database by the Serials
Department, rendering information on the entire journals collection retrievable
from the OPAC.
During the summer
vacation, in consultation with Faculty of Education academic staff, the
collection was reviewed and weeded of superseded stock.
LEE HYSAN MEDICAL LIBRARY
From Mary
Leong (Medical Librarian)
The main focus over the summer was the transfer of
pre-1986 bound volumes of journals to the new storage facility in the Pauline
Chan Building, and the incorporation of all remaining bound volumes into the
compact shelving on the lower basement floor. The vacated mezzanine floor was
transformed into a pleasant reading room which is proving very popular with
users. Wireless antennae will be installed in the near future for use of
laptops in the area.
As for the increasing pressure on space in the book
collections, the comprehensive review of pre-1986 publications begun during the
summer months remained in progress. Final decisions were also made on the 46
titles identified for cancellation during the recent serials review.
Library orientation tours were held on 17 July for
50 participants of the Faculty of Medicines Summer Broadening Course for Form
6 students interested in medicine. New Nursing Studies students were introduced
to the library facilities from 29-30 August, and an information skills workshop
was held for Master of Nursing in Advanced Practice students on 6 September.
The series of information skills programmes for new medical students,
consisting of Searching for evidence:
basic skills 1 & 2 (1 hr each) and Searching
for evidence: advanced skills (2 hrs) were completed during the Orientation
and Informatics and Decision-Making Weeks, from 11 - 22 September.
A small exhibition of library materials related to
the historical origins of the Faculty of Medicine is currently being held in
the library reference area.
Mrs Mary Leong attended the Orientation Dinner
organized by the Faculty of Medicine and the Medical Society on 14 September at
the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and enjoyed meeting many new medical and
nursing students.
LUI CHE WOO LAW LIBRARY
From Sng
Chan Yok Fong (Law Librarian)
To cater to the continual growth of the Chinese law
collection, an extensive relocation exercise was conducted during the last
semester and over the summer to transfer duplicate copies of less used and
older materials to storage. This
has released much shelving space to make way for new publications in what is a
rapidly expanding collection.
ؤH@M̰Hk|1985-1999~XqL (Gazette
of the Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China) is among the Law Library's latest acquisitions of
Chinese legal research materials. This standalone CD contains gazettes of the
Supreme People's Court for the period 1985-1999, as well as judicial documents
issued between 1949 and 1997.
The librarys English-language serials subscriptions
were reviewed and considered for cancellation in co-operation with the Faculty
of Law. Five titles were finally approved for cancellation from a short list of
30.
A new edition of the Law Library's Master List of Holdings of Serial Titles,
Law Reports, Legislation & Current Looseleaf Publications was completed
and is currently being printed and bound.
The new semester kicked off with a series of
orientation programmes and tours for new law students and postgraduates. To tie
in with the orientation, an exhibition entitled Know More About Your Law Library is now being held in the Law
Library foyer to highlight library resources and services. A new leaflet
introducing the Law Library is also available from the library. Users are
welcome to obtain a copy as a handy reference.
MUSIC LIBRARY
From Helen
Woo (Music Librarian)
With
an ever-increasing number of popular music, jazz, new age, rag, rap, reggae,
rock n roll, blues, country and folk music CDs now being acquired to support
new courses, it is deemed timely to separate the non-classical from the
classical CDs. New Dewey Decimal Classification numbers are now being assigned
to the former category to improve browsing capabilities. Classical CDs will
still be shelved alphabetically by composer surname.
Work
on developing a Hong Kong Composers Collection continues. The entire collection
of scores and audio-visual materials has been reviewed to assign a local code
to items which fit into this category.
Orientation
sessions were given to 35 students who attended the Department of Musics
admissions interviews in June. Six orientation sessions are planned for late
September/early October, five for undergraduates and one for postgraduates.
Several
summer projects were completed or in progress during the months of July and
August. They included the transfer of low usage books and multiple copies of
older editions to storage; the binding of journals; the revision of the Music
Library Guide and of the master list of serials for the librarys web page; the
updating of the Music Internet Resources pages; and amendments to catalogue
records for the more efficient retrieval of music materials.
Visitors
during this period included some conference attendees from the Second National
(China) Conference of Melody Studies, and Dr. Jose Maceda, Executive Director,
Center for Ethnomusicology of the University of the Philippines.
The
Music Library would like to thank Professor K.C. Lye, former head of the
Department of Architecture, for his donation of more than 200 LPs.
In August, Ms Irene Shieh, Assistant Librarian in the Law Library, was awarded the Diploma in Legal Studies, the Certificate in Legal Studies (Year 2), and the Certificate in Introduction to the Chinese Legal System, all with distinction. Our hearty congratulations to her for her excellent results after having attended a 2-year course at SPACE and passed the requisite examinations. Irene was sponsored by the Libraries to attend the course as part of our staff development programme.
A paper by Deputy
Librarian Mr Lawrence Tam, entitled Quality
management theory and practice: some observations of practices in Australian
academic libraries was published in the MCB University Press journal
Library Management, vol.21, no.7, 2000, pp.349-356.
On 26 July, Deputy Librarian Mr Lawrence Tam gave a seminar and workshop on The Management of Change in Library and
Information Services in the Digital Age to a group of 26 Librarians from
Mainland China. This Summer Workshop for Librarians, held from 17 July - 2
August, was hosted by Lingnan University Library.
Two members of
staff resigned in August: Ms Francine Yuen, Assistant Librarian II, and Ms Anne
Chan, Temporary Probationary Assistant Librarian. We would like to thank them
both for their contribution to the work of the Libraries during their time with
us.
