Sally Ride was first American woman in space 36 years ago

On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first female astronaut in space. Ride lifted off in Space Shuttle Challenger from Kennedy Space Center with crew commander Robert Crippen, pilot Frederick Hauck, and fellow mission specialists John Fabian and Norman Thagard.
