Shortlist for V&A Museum in Dundee unveiled

Six architects have been selected to submit designs for a new branch of the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum planned for Dundee's waterfront.

Among them are Edinburgh-based firm Sutherland Hussey and a collaberation involving a team from across the UK and Oslo-based Snohetta.

More than 120 firms have taken part in the competition to design the landmark building.

The Dundee V&A is due to open in 2014 as a centre of 21st Century design.

Also competing for the commission are Viennese architect Delugan Meissl, who designed the Porsche Museum in Germany and Kengo Kuma, the creator of the Nagasaki Art Museum.

Lesley Knox, who headed the jury deciding on the shortlist, said: "The high quality and wide variety of the shortlist will enable the partners to create a building which will not only be part of the transformation of Dundee's waterfront but also be a landmark for visitors from Scotland and all over the world."

The remaining contenders, including Steven Holl and REX, will now be asked to produce design concepts and models, which will go on public view in the library of the University of Abertay Dundee.

The winner of the design competition will then be announced in late summer.
