Making Metal Clay Molds

SINCE METAL CLAY IS SO SOFT when you first start forming with it, the material lends itself well to working with molds, and there are a lot of different ways to make your own molds. For example, you can make a pretty simple mold by pressing a favorite charm or button into a piece of polymer clay and baking the polymer clay piece to harden it. If you are pretty good at carving, you can also use polymer clay in the same way and instead of pressing something into the clay, you can carve your own...

Cone System Metal Clay Firing Method

The SpeedFire Cone System, is made up of a fiber cone that is connected to a tank of propane, and therefore, since propane burns at around 3450 degrees F, it becomes plenty hot enough to fire all types of metal clay, not just the low-fire varieties. It can also fire up to 100 grams of metal clay. Now, propane can actually become too hot and end up turning your silver clay into silver puddles, so this system also includes a pyrometer, which is a device used to control temperatures, and if you plan to use this system or a kiln.

Stop Beads And Alternatives

A stop bead's sole purpose is to keep other beads from falling off of the thread. To secure one, string on a bead and position it about 8 inches from the end of the thread. String back through the stop bead again, and pull the thread taut. Optionally, string back through the stop bead one more time to make it as secure as possible. The stop bead only needs to remain in place until you are ready to weave-in the tail of the thread (see p. 126). You then use a needle or beading awl to carefully...

Cellini spiral necklace

Circular peyote stitch takes on a sculptural look when it's worked in beads of various sizes. The Cellini spiral is essentially circular peyote executed with graduated beads. The...

Add gemstones in your metal clay jewelry pieces

Like traditional metal work, you can also include gemstones in your metal clay jewelry pieces. You can add stones either before or after the firing process, but there are some limitations if you want to fire with the stones in the clay. While some stones like diamonds and rubies can generally deal with high temperatures, they can have inclusions in them that you can't see with the naked eye, and if heated, you could get cracks in the stones.

Tassel Necks

Most tassels have a neck Sometimes that is all they do have, no head and no skirt either. Beaded tassel necks are often tubes, made either as a flat piece of beading stitched into a cylinder or tubular beading worked on a supporting rod These cylinders and tubes are supported by having hanks of yarn pulled through them, fitting very tightly so you often don't need to wrap the neck with another yarn. Beads are so beautiful that a cylinder of plain beading is often all you want, but you can mix...

Wire enhances a sculptural peyote pin

Bezel Peyote

Make these peyote leaves in a riot of fall colors, or choose a subdued palette of rich metallic . Either way, this leaf pm will be a fabulous addition to your fall wardrobe. Stitch the leaves separately, then attach them to a base, and embellish them with more beads and wire. Once you master the leaves, experiment to see what else you can create with them. This brooch easily converts to a necklace by adding it to a stitched neckband. Individual leaves also can be used to make a pair of playful...

Brick Stitch Triangle Earrings

To weave brick stitch, you first need to use the ladder stitch, so this earring project shown in Figure 6-23 is sort of a two-for-one deal when it comes to practicing bead weaving stitches. Brick stitch naturally evolves into a triangular-shaped section of beads, unless you add or subtract beads during the process. For this design, we kept the natural triangle shape and accented the bottom with tiny fringe beads small, side-drilled, teardrop-shaped glass beads that often are added to the bottom...

Wire Weaving With Beads: How to Add a Bead

Wire weaving with beads adds a little extra je ne sais quoi, n'est ce pas Here's how to add beads to your next wire weaving project. I'd like to give a special thanks to Donna for submitting so many beautiful tutorials. You can find more of her tutorials on my website linking from the Making Wire Jewelry page Instructions In this lesson I will teach you how to add a bead to a woven project so that the bead lies neatly on top of the weave.

Wire Weaving Techniques: The Basic Weave

InstructionsThis tutorial teaches a few basic wire weaving techniques. These techniques are very important to know when you first start weaving with wire. Most weaving projects you encounter will incorporate some form of at least one of these techniques. For this tutorial, I am using 16g wire for the frame wires and 26g wire for the weaving wire. I'm using these gauges to better show the detail in these weaves. That is why this tutorial calls for those two gauges of wire.

Embellishment

Bead Loom Construction

Adding surface embellishment in the form of beads or other decorative detail is an excellent way to enhance a woven base. This kind of embellishment can become the focus of the piece or may just enhance the design. When enclosing a bar for support, sew the woven material back together following this thread path. Abalone Disk. 6 x 10 plus ties. I or tho most part, surface embellishment will be sewn on but glue can be used if there is no other option. In the case of the necklace shown at right,...

Closing a crimp bead

Being able to properly close a crimp bead on the end of a beaded piece of jewelry like a necklace or bracelet can be challenging at first. If you haven't done crimping in a while, remember that this technique does take some practice. It's pretty rare to do it perfectly on the first try. Although you can flatten a crimp bead with a pair of chain-nose pliers, we recommend using a pair of crimping pliers (see Figure 2-1) to get a more finished look to your beaded designs.

How to Make a Knotted Wire Headpin

InstructionsHeadpins are used very often when creating jewelry. If you have a torch, it's easy to create your own headpins. However, if you don't have one, or if you are like me and don't trust yourself with a torch, buying pre-made headpins may seem like the only option. This tutorial teaches you to make your own decorative wire headpins without the need for a torch. The tutorial calls for 22g wire. This makes these headpins great for heavier beads.

Cavandoli Tapestry Knotting

Mastering a uniform knotting technique takes practice and repetition. I strongly suggest that you work through the following steps and do some sampler pieces before attempting any of the jewelry projects. In addition to the cord, you will need a macram board and a few other general supplies see the Materials chapter for a complete list . Once you fully understand how to make each knot and have achieved...

Lining and Finishing

To conceal the hanging cords, it's necessary to make a hem with them. Flip the piece to the back. Cut off excess cord leaving a short 1 4 hem. 2. Cut a piece of lining fabric to fit the piece leaving an extra inch on all sides for a hem. The finishing touch

Place a pea-sized piece of liver-of-sulfur Into an old or disposable pie pan or large shallow container filled halfway with hot water. Add a coil of wire and let it darken, then remove, rinse, and dry. Liver-of-sulfur is very smelly stuff, so do it outside. Wrap the wire around the end of the round nose pliers. When you've wrapped all the way around so you have a loop around the end of the pliers, remove the wire from the pliers, grasp the loop with needle-nose pliers, and gently turn the...

How to String Beads

Learning how to string beads is pretty easy. Just get some string and put some beads on it right Well you could do it that way, (and I have, I must admit,) but to get a really professional finished look, you have to have a little more technique and know-how. Getting started with bead stringing is really easy though. Before you begin to learn how to string beads, you only need a handful of tools and materials. Pretty painless in terms of initial outlay too.
