Supreme Court Hears Case Challenging January 6 Obstruction Charge
1 hour, 42 minutesThe Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to narrow the interpretation of a federal statute used to charge January 6 defendants with obstruction. The nation's high court ruling could impact hundreds of January 6 defendants' cases as well as Special Counsel Jack Smith's election interference case against former President Donald Trump. Chief Justice John Roberts authored the court's majority opinion. Justice Amy Coney Barrett inked the dissent. With this ruling, the case is also headed back down to the lower federal court for additional proceedings. The justices heard oral argument in Fischer v. United States back in April 2024. Joseph Fischer, a January 6 defendant who filed the lawsuit, challenged a criminal statute used by the federal government to charge him with obstructing an official proceeding during the Capitol attack.

Homeland Security Secretary Holds Press Conference on Border Security

Supreme Court Hears Case on Idaho Abortion Ban & Emergency Care
2 hours, 2 minutesThe Supreme Court heard oral argument in Moyle v. United States, a consolidated case on whether a federal law allowing emergency abortion care at hospitals receiving Medicare funding preempts Idaho's ban on nearly all abortions. Under the 2020 Defense of Life Act there are very limited exceptions for abortions in the state. One can only occur if it is "necessary to prevent the death of the pregnant woman" or in cases of rape or incest. This law took effect in August 2022 after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The Biden administration filed suit against Idaho arguing its abortion law conflicts with the 1986 Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) which requires emergency care including abortions if needed. The justices have through June 2024.
