The Playboy Club (2011)
My Thoughts on the Pilot
I'm so disappointed in this episode. This was one of the series I had been looking forward to the most for this falls line-up. I liked the premise of the show and after watching the first episode I still like where the story is heading, but everything else was pretty bad.
My major difficulties with this episode was that the cast was awful. If the acting wasn't bad it was the wrong actor for the wrong part. Mainly the mob boss and the manager of the playboy club were characters that didn't fit with the actors. My other concern was the dialog. Wow, the dialog is really terrible, everything sounded unreal and corny. I can't say I've experienced that feeling watching a prime time TV-series before, the dialog is often better in some shows and less good in others, but this was just bad. I was wondering if I was watching a high school drama or something.
The pros, like I said before, I liked the story, and the two lead characters aren't that bad actually, even if the lead character, Nick Dalton, is a replica of Don Draper that it's scary, but that is it for the pros really.
I really want to continue watching this show because the plot is pretty intriguing, but I don't think I should. The show just feels like something mainly made for NBC because it wanted it's own Mad Men replica. I hate quitting on a show too early so I'm going to catch next week's episode, but I don't think I'm going to like it.
Free Agents (2011)
My Thoughts on the Pilot
I kind of liked the premise of this show and even if it wasn't a 20 minutes 'laugh out load' episode, it was nice and had me at least laughing a couple of times. Good enough to keep me wanna come back for next week.
This series is probably not gonna be one of those series that wins any awards but will stick around for a while, keeping us entertained. But what do I know, it could very well be one of those shows that grows on you and becomes better with time. The jokes were solid, the cast were solid and the plot were solid, enough to make it on my watch list for a laugh or two on Wednesday evenings.
Check it out and have it on your regular weekly schedule at least, even though it won't be the best new show this fall, I'm looking forward to Terra Nova and Person of Interest, I will write my view on there pilots as well.
Ringer (2011)
My Thoughts on the Pilot
I watched the first episode of Ringer the other day without knowing at all what it was going to be about. I hadn't planned to watch this particular show this fall but after seeing a lot of promotion for it on various sites, I decided I would give it a chance, but after seeing it I have yet to decide if I will become a regular viewer or not.
What did I think of the pilot then? The episode felt very rushed in the beginning. I though the setup of the characters and the main story arc could have needed some more time and work. I didn't really buy why she would run away and hit that policeman and steal his gun and how she really managed to do that. Well, I do understand why she did it but it just felt rushed. Then we got introduced to a sister and without even having the chance to get to know her, she killed herself and it didn't feel weird at all for the lead character to take her sister's place. I thought this was pretty strange and would have liked more time to explain why and what she felt after this. I would rather have the episode end here and put more time into the details of this part of the story, that would have been more interesting.
Instead we got introduced to a lot of small intrigues after this. The stepdaughter with cocaine problems, the police hunting the lead character, a gangster hunting the lead character, a failing marriage, the sister cheating with her best friend's husband and some guy trying to kill the sister. You would think I described the whole series now rather than only the pilot but this is what happened. Like I said before, instead of putting effort into these parts I would have been more interested in exploring the beginning of the show. If this was meant to keep you hooked and meant to bring you back for next week's episode, it worked, but not because I'm particularly intrigued by these things but rather because I'm confused and want to see what this turns out to be.
I'll give it another episode but I don't think I will give it more than that nor do I think the network will, it feels like a pretty lazy written show with a plot premise we kind of have already seen this summer in The Laying Game but we will see.
