Northwest corner of Hoboken to be studied as a redevelopment zone

The City Council tonight passed a resolution asking the Planning Board to undertake a study of 19 blocks in northwest Hoboken.

You can see a rough outline of those 19 blocks -- "a proposed area of redevelopment" -- above that are going to be studied as part of the plan.

Hoboken resident Dan Thumpson speaks out against the redevelopment study as Terry Castellano and Beth Mason listen.

Several Hoboken residents spoke out against the plan.

"This is the same resolution we saw at the last meeting ... just bigger," said Cheryl Fallick.

One Hoboken resident who is usually critical of PILOTs, Lane Bajardi, spoke in favor of the blight study.

"This resolution seems to me to be an opportunity to give the City Council an opportunity to take a look at the entire area and take a look at what it wants to do with that area," said Bajardi tonight. "... We can use the PILOTS in a proper way, in a proper fashion."

Beth Mason introduced the ordinance and resident Dan Thumpson said he was surprised Mason supports the study.

"If Hoboken stops building it will die," said Mason of why she supports the redevelopment study. "You have to continue to grow."

All the Council members voted to study that area as a redevelopment zone except for Terry LaBruno, Dawn Zimmer and Peter Cunningham.

The Hoboken Planning Board will hire a planner to do the study, which will take three to four months to complete.
