In the fifth year of his reign Amunhotep renamed himself Akhenetan, the "Effective of Aten" and he and his beautiful queen Nefertiti set about building a city in the desert for the worship of Aten, the sun disk. The name of Akhenaten was expunged and his city was obliterated by Pharaohs who followed Akhnetan, and the city is now the desolate ruin of Amarna to which you will be treated to a brief tour guide near the end of the opera. This is the Philip Glass opera to begin with, and the version to get. Don't listen to Aida for the nth time if you haven't heard Akhnaten twice. This performance by Davies, Esswood singing Akhnetan (when he eventually gets the chance to sing) and the Stuttgart Opera Orchestra "makes the river shine" with Akhenaten's vision of a universal God embodied in the sun disk Aten, and worshipped in open courtyards instead of shadowed temples. Akhnetan was more than unusual. He was the rare individual who comes along every thousand years ago, and changes everything. He may have been the father of monotheism (Freud thought so), and if he wasn't it was not for a lack of trying. This proposition, debated by scholars, is why Akhnetan (Glass's equally valid spelling), is the third figure in Glass's operatic trilogy, joining Einstein and Gandhi. The subject of Akhnetan is perfectly suited to Glass's music which is relentless, repetitive and beautifully symmetrical, very like the sun disk with its little hands reaching out at the very tips of long rays of light. This is not my metaphor, but describes how Akhnetan chose to have Aten carved in stone. Glass's arpeggios are not so unlike little hands. Today we can view the extreme beauty of Akhnetan's consort and the extreme weirdness of Akhnetan himself carved in stone, and as he chose to depict himself. This is Akhnetan in music, both weird, and extremely beautiful.

I bought this from Amazon cold. I'd heard some of Glass's previous work and found it interesting; I knew enough of Akhnaten to be curious; thus, I bought the first opera in my life.
I knew nothing about opera before this purchase, and I very probably know nothing now. It tells no story and does not add up; it begins without a theme and ends without concluding. It uses outdated Budge translations for some of its English sections, which would be annoying even if they bore the slightest relation to the nominal subject, Akhnaten, which they do not. And yet...
I love the thing. After the third time I listened to it, it became clear that the opera is as nebulous as its putative subject. The true historical Akhnaten can never add up; we haven't enough information. He can only prod and tantalize us with bits and scraps of disjointed, puzzling details of events three and a half millenia old. In the same way Glass prods and challenges us too: Akhnaten, lunatic or savior, is an inkblot test for anyone who looks at him. We, the listener, become the protagonist.
When you reach the tour guide ending you get the joke: At first it seems like a tortured cop-out, but it's really a reminder that everything prior to this wozzy Epilogue took place nowhere in real space or time. In true gnostic fashion, the opera demanded we look within. It succeeds magnificently.

The recording of Phillip Glass' Akhnaten is wonderful. That said, I ordered two CDs but one plastic case arrived broken. I emailed the company who sent it (Rarewaves) to ask that they exchange the unopened CED for one that wasn't damaged. When they received the returned CD they gave me my money back and told me I would have to re-order Akhnaten. It took so long to arrive the first time (about one month because I think it came from England) that I decided NOT to re-order until a recording is made of Costanza singing it (at the Met in NYC). I gave the other CD to my sister for Christmas (which arrived in January despite a December 3rd purchase).

You either love Glass or you hate him. Personally I think he’s great. The music is minimalist but it is always interesting. He sets up a theme and introduces subtle changes as the piece progresses. For most of the work, treat it as a meditation exercise and just allow the piece to carry you along. For the “Funeral of Amenhotep III” just sit in awe—it has got to be one of the coolest pieces of music written in the 20th century.

I saw the opera at the Met in November and had to have the album as the music was still haunting me. I know there are Phil Glass bashers out there, but it's all a matter of one's tastes. The repetative sound is what most who do not like Glass's work fuss about, but for me it is beautifully hypnotic and lingering. I read one review that described the music as transcendental meditation put to sound. Beautiful and apt description.

This is a mix of music and storytelling. All very interesting, although the music does get a little bit samey towards the end.

I didn't start out as a fan of Glass, but his collaboration with Ravi Shankar, and his film soundtracks have won me over. My partner is a major Glass fan, and the first time I heard the "Funeral of Amenhotep III" I was hooked. The rest of the opera is not quite so spine-tingling, but it's a worthy part of the genre.
I certainly have not heard all of Glass's vast body of work, but the "Funeral of Amenhotep III" is my favorite. It needs to be paired with the preceding track for context, but it can stand alone as a thrilling, crank-it-up experience.

Bought this after seeing the Metropolitan Opera production in 2019. The voices are marvelous, the orchestra is first rate. 2 CDs and a booklet. For an opera with a stately and ritualistic approach to a somewhat obscure historical figure, the music is surprisingly moving. The drumming in the Funeral scene is startling and terrific. PBS will show this in April, 2020. See it. Hear it.

Bought the CD after watching a live streaming of the opera. One of the best operas I have seen and the music is absolutely superb. I’m a Philip Glass fan anyway but this is possibly his best composition.
