Working for democracy and making democracy work
About us
The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nongovernmental organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. Since its founding in 1983, NDI has worked with local partners in 130 countries and territories, bringing together individuals and groups to share ideas, knowledge, experiences and expertise. Partners receive broad exposure to best practices in international democratic development that can be adapted to the needs of their own countries. NDI’s multinational approach reinforces the message that while there is no single democratic model, certain core principles are shared by all democracies. The Institute’s work upholds the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It also promotes the development of institutionalized channels of communications among citizens, political institutions and elected officials, and strengthens their ability to improve the quality of life for all citizens.

#EarthDay: Amid Poland's diverse urban landscape, citizen-led initiatives are reshaping communities and addressing pressing issues with the support of National Democratic Institute (NDI)'s Central Europe Civic Engagement Project (CECEP). The project aims to empower citizens and foster stronger collaboration between civil society and the government. Within Poland's dynamic urban centers, grassroots activism is gaining momentum, tackling environmental challenges head-on. One such initiative, the Rescue Action for Cities (RAfC), stands out as a beacon of citizen empowerment in Krakow. Born out of shared concerns over the environment and governmental inaction, RAfC embodies the collaborative spirit of its community. Their mission is clear: to unite, exchange experiences, and collectively advocate for city authorities to tackle pressing urban challenges. With CECEP's support, RAfC has become a driving force for change, shaping the political agenda, mobilizing residents to address urban issues and tapping into a community of like-minded partners. As Poland approaches a pivotal electoral period, RAfC's endeavors provide a powerful framework to shape policy agendas and help promote more sustainable development. ✍🏽: Darina Regio https://bit.ly/3TXWXcw

#EarthDay: National Democratic Institute (NDI) has engaged in programming on the environment for over twenty years. Often, the environment is an issue political parties, civil society and youth choose for their democracy strengthening to build cross-party coalitions, stand up youth academies, engage civil society in policy making, and promote other important government functions. In 2021, NDI leadership identified environmental governance as a strategic priority of the Institute – a wise decision as the Institute’s environmental programming since 2015 has grown rapidly. As countries grapple with designing and executing large-scale adaptation, mitigation and protection plans, issues of democratic participation and governance are increasingly urgent. In light of the importance of democracy and governance for the environment, NDI’s work in 2023 will be pivotal in establishing NDI as an environmental governance leader. ✍🏽: Lauren Van Metre, Ph.D. & Dr Violeta Vajda https://bit.ly/3JvMfW4

#EarthDay: The participation and empowerment of citizens in all their diversity are the keys to healthy and resilient democracies, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the realm of environmental sustainability. The unique climate-related challenges that face communities around the world require innovative, local solutions that address the needs of those affected, especially the marginalized communities who feel the effects of climate change most acutely. That is why the National Democratic Institute (NDI) is proud to partner with TERRE Liban, a Lebanese organization, on the “Building Environmentally Sustainable Municipalities” program, with financial support from Porticus. This program, titled “Democratic Eco Municipalities,” makes clear the links between democracy, citizen participation, and the efficiency of local environmental protection. It spanned three villages in Lebanon—Anjar, Douma, and Majdel Selm—and combined the local knowledge and needs of citizens with the technical expertise of legal and environmental experts to create a roadmap to a sustainable future. By contextualizing the diverse needs and perspectives of different members of the community with environmental and legal technical expertise, each of these three communities were able to develop a common understanding of environmental challenges and build a cross-community action plan. ✍🏽: Kara Joyce Read more: https://bit.ly/444ATBG

A recent Madania (civilian-fed) forum in Sudan, organized by NDI and its civil society partner, Shemoos Organization for Sustainable Development was part of a two-year effort to foster dialogue between youth and local decision-makers in five states across Sudan. While this was a local event, focused on local problems, today many of Sudan’s civilian leaders are working to end a devastating war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) which began in April 2023 and has upended the country. The route through which they will achieve peace is still unclear, but Kassala’s Madania forum serves as a model for how Sudan’s young people can play an important role in identifying solutions, fostering dialogue, and bridging gaps in their communities. https://bit.ly/4cRlRDx

One of the biggest challenges we face in #internetgovernance is that decisionmaking is concentrated in the hands of the very few for a system that should be for everyone. I'm so proud that National Democratic Institute (NDI) supported civil society in #maldives in hosting their first ever Internet Governance Forum, and instantly we saw results: better relationships with companies, more engagement with government and generally speaking, proof that the multi-stakeholder approach is key to a democratic information space.
