Fishy, Fishy In the Brook!

When I was a little girl, I remember my mama reading this poem out of The Childcraft Encyclopedia.
Anybody remember these books?
They looked like this:

Anyway, here is the poem!
Fishy, fishy, in a brook
Daddy caught him with a hook
Mommy fried him in a pan
And baby ate him like a man.

How did this go down?

Kids used tracers and traced an eye.

Then, they drew an M.

Then, they drew a U.

Then, they drew some triangles.

Then they painted with Dick Blick Liquid Watercolors!

LOOK!

Paper Mache Fish in Folk Art Class

We tackled this project with paper mache strips and cardboard. Loved the way that these fish turned out. This lesson was about the process. Some students had never worked in this type of media. I shared with the class several Folk Artists and their styles in a class discussion previous to the lesson.

We worked on our craftsmanship and the process of paper mache. Here are other links to our paper mache units. Take a looksy!

Kimmy Cantrell Cardboard Folk Art Fish

Have you ever taught Kimmy Cantrell? If not, I highly recommend this artist. The students had a blast with this lesson. We have blogged on him before here: Kimmy Cantrell goes Fishing!  Lots of details here on how this lesson is taught.

Check out Kimmy Cantrell website here: https://kimart.com/

How did the lesson happen? Well, we looked at his website. Had a major conversation about his art. The pros / cons. And lots of questions of "How"... I had card board scraps, Students cut out their fish. Designed them with oil pastels. We used push pins, nails, office supplies, scrap box material and such to create these mixed media pieces.

Tomorrow I will post the faces from this unit! Stay tuned and be sure to visit again, 1969

Clay Fish for a Middle School Foundations Art Class

So, each year the students want to make these. Each year we try to create something using the same process. I get several students that want to add things like a fish hook for a finishing touch. Pretty cool, don't ya think? Scroll down to see how this batch turned out. Click link below to see previous posting on same lesson.
