This article addresses the role North American entrepreneurs have played in the redefinition of productive work in two Mexican villages: Taxco, the city of silver, and Álamos. The entrepreneurial businesses set up by North Americans in these towns have had a fundamental role in the constitution of the social spaces as tourist places. The article analyzes these entrepreneurs as change makers in transforming the cultural identity of these places. Before the entrepreneurs' arrival, the towns experienced severe economic crises and were not considered tourist destinations. This article seeks to fill the research gap on North American entrepreneurs and their sociocultural impact on tourism sites in Mexico.

Palabras clave: turismo, noche, economía de la experiencia, prácticas, interacción social Abstract In this article the purpose is to identify the dimensions of a research area: night tourism. This approach refers to practices, relationships, beliefs, consumptions and use of locations that are preferably dedicated to tourist activities after sunset. With this, it is addressed the relationship between darkness, material culture and a set of specific social experiences. This implies considering the night as a social agent that plays an active role in the construction and development of social interactions.

The death of Fidel Castro, and the steps taken by Raúl Castro to normalize relations between Cuba and the US, have generated a wave of tourism opportunities. However, deep tensions remain between the Cuban state’s centralized socioeconomic model and economic realities. Using the framework of diverse economies, we challenge tourism scholars to unlock the diversity of economies and exchanges that exist, and the Cuban case study in this paper assists in demonstrating why this is important. Within this sensitive political context, we analyse entrepreneurial businesses known as casas particulares, and their broader significance for Cuba’s political futures within the framework of diverse economies. In doing so, we tap into debates about diverse economies. Ethnographic fieldwork is conducted in Viñales, a municipality which has experienced tourism growth, and since 1999 has been a UNESCO World Cultural Landscape. We explore everyday tourism practices and diverse exchanges in tourism to nuance the social and political significance of the State’s policies

The aim is to show that this tourism policy only defines and operates through economic terms, which then presents mixed results. On one hand it creates positive indicators in local development, yet on the other hand it creates or preserves inequality and social exclusion. In other words, this chapter seeks to demonstrate that the current model of public policy used in the Pueblos Mágicos program is not sustainable; on the contrary, it generates negative effects on the sustainability scale, in the context of community development understood as something beyond economic exchange

This article discusses how the construction and institutionalization of social representations in Tepoztlán, Mexico, have influenced the definition of tourism in this community. We propose the concept of an intimate experience economy to analyze the forms of institutionalization that places, practices, symbols, and relationships have and how they together generate what most people consider authentic experiences, recreation, and comfort. The article concludes that tourism is a complex network of social relations that has a tendency to create asymmetric relations of exploitation and culture.

This article addresses this research gap and explores how the aims of local development and cultural sustainability defined in the Mexican national tourism program Pueblos Mágicos are put into practice. The analysis is focused on how citizenship, local participation and democracy are operationalized and what are the local consequences of this governmental program in the community of Álamos. By following the constitution and decision-making processes in the local Pueblos Mágicos committee, we demonstrate how different groups bargain on behalf of the ‘community’ and how they seize the opportunity to promote different development priorities. In particular, we address the role of a North American migrant community in shaping sustainable tourism development as cultural brokers, social entrepreneurs and mediators of market knowledge. The paper criticizes the notion of homogenous local communities as an instrumental condition of sustainable and participatory development.
