“What? Charles Lord Cornwallis was in Goochland?”

Moving our conference to the Greater Richmond area in 2024 will give America’s History a chance to offer a whole new menu of tours in the years ahead. In 2024, we have designed a tour entitled “What? Charles Lord Cornwallis was in Goochland?” Over the years, conference attendees have heard that the world HQ of America’s History LLC is located in Goochland County, Virginia. Now you’ll get to experience the thrill of seeing Goochland firsthand as Cornwallis did in June 1781. Rest assured, not much has changed.
This tour is based on an article John Maas wrote for the Goochland County Historical Society’s magazine in 2009 entitled “The Greatest Terror Imaginable: Cornwallis Brings His Campaign to Goochland, June, 1781.” This issue is still considered one of the best issues ever published by the GCHS. The maps, images and narrative are first rate. Copies of this issue will be included as part to your tour package.
After leaving the hotel, the bus will stop at Hanover Court House, do a drive-by of Scotchtown, one of Patrick Henry’s plantation homes and stop at Ground Squirrel Bridge. We’ll have a short stop at Mount Brilliant where Cornwallis and his officers camped in early June. We’ll also see the site of the Bates Plantation in Goochland Court House which was rampaged by the Redcoats. Perhaps the highlight of the tour will be a stop in Columbia, Virginia to see “Point of Fork” where the Baron de Steuben briefly dueled it out with Lt. Col. John Graves Simcoe before retreating, leaving an American arsenal and supply depot to the British. We’ll also see the site of Thomas Jefferson’s Elk Hill planation where Cornwallis rested his troops and burned everything in sight. Time permitting, we may be able to stop at a rarely seen Lafayette-related site that may not be with us much longer, unless it receives some serious preservation work. This tour will be a full day of history and sites that most Revolutionary War enthusiasts have never experienced.
What’s included: motor coach transportation, lunch, beverage and snack breaks, a map and materials package, all gratuities, and the services of an experienced tour leader. About our tour leader: Dr. John Maass is a historian at the new National Museum of the U.S. Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and the author several 18th century military history books. He received his Ph.D. in history from The Ohio State University.
