The subject of the paper is intersubjectivity and verifiability of judgments about the quality of translation. Criteria for identification of a text to be a translation and possibilities of assessing the value of translation based on the classic triad of truth, goodness and beauty are discussed. The starting point for the axiological assessment is the ontic structure of the original. It is shown how a type of relationship between the original and the translation impacts on the assessment of translation.

The subject of the paper is intersubjectivity and verifiability of judgments about the quality of translation. Criteria for identification of a text to be a translation and possibilities of assessing the value of translation based on the classic triad of truth, goodness and beauty are discussed. The starting point for the axiological assessment is the ontic structure of the original. The article refers to the concept of translation as a game. The author assumes that translation is not a simple sum of unrelated decisions that can be considered in isolation from one another, but is a comprehensive, multi-faceted creation, a result of a project-based-action. In order to take this complexity into account in the assessment of a translation, it is postulated to use the so-called splice evaluation, based on the category of difference and an assessment of strategy. Therefore, a strategic error is treated as a primary type of error in the translation. The paper poses a question about the possibility of optimizing translation referring to the game tree. Based on examples from the translation of the novel Die Rättin by Günter Grass, how translation can be evaluated and optimized is illustrated.

Summary The paper reflects on the specificity of the translation of texts belonging to the religious and theological literature. Religious and theological texts have been translated for millennia, many of them — originating in the sphere of Judeo-Christianity — lie at the core of Western culture. Their translation, especially the translation of the Bible, was accompanied by theoretical reflection (see, for example, Jerome of Stridonium, Martin Luther or Eugene Nida), which permanently influenced the way of thinking about translation in general. The present study answers the question of how the translation of religious and theological texts differs from the translation of other texts and what the translator must or should take into account, translating religious and theological texts. The paper discusses, among others, the role of the word in Christianity, spiritual preparation, openness to the Holy Spirit, tradition and inculturation.

Schematized Aspects in Roman Ingarden’s Theory of the Literary Work of Art From the Perspective of Translation In the article is considered if it is possible that there is some kind of representations similarity in case of the author of the Literary Work of Art and its readers and if an “imagination community” between readers of the original and the translation can be established. In the first part of the article the theory of Literary Work of Art by Ingarden is presented with a special focus on his “Schematized aspects”. Their function is to guarantee the vividness of the literary work. The types of vividness which are distinguish in the modern linguistics are told over as well. Hypothesising about the Principles of Translation Studies In every field of study, there are some fundamental assumptions, laws or certainties. What is the situation in translation studies? Do the existing translational theories, which subsume very different theoretical and methodological approaches, offer a common denominator for not always convergent, and sometimes even openly contradictory, theoretical proposals of particular researchers? On the other hand, perhaps there are some translational assumptions and laws which all theoreticians, or at least the majority of them, would admit to be acceptable? The article attempts to create a catalogue of principles which seem to be fundamental for translation studies.

Grass’s novel Die Rättin is a multi-faceted piece of work reflecting on the past, present and future, combining realism with fairy tales and myth. The anti-utopian project of the future plays a special role in the novel. In the article, the author analyzes the functions and translations of toponyms in Grass’s novel and its Polish translation by Błaut examining how far the project of the future is identical in the original and translation and whether the translation strategy of toponyms selected by the translator is a correct strategy or whether it leads to the loss of multiple references and it destroys the author’s complicated creation of a city with a double identity.
