Superb particle filtering, no VOC or odor filtering, annoying odor.
3 out of 5 stars
Superb particle filtering, no VOC or odor filtering, annoying odor.
Short version. Superb filtering, vertical discharge, high air flow, low noise, low power consumption, solid app, not cat friendly, MUCH bigger in person. Awkward to move as there are no handles or indentations to grip it with. There is a small ionizer that can't be turned off (only 5 parts per billion, practically zero). The carbon part of the filter is worthless and adds an odd odor. It faintly smells like an old campfire pit that has gotten wet. To summarize: This is a big help with filtering out air born particles in the PM1 range when used in smaller spaces and when run on higher speeds.Long version. Exterior fabric pre filter stretches over a non HEPA filter. There is a weak ionizer to supplement the main filter so that it filters at HEPA levels without all of the back pressure issues associated with the tighter weaves of a true HEPA filter. With this design they are able to have really high CADR's with low power consumption and moderate to very low noise levels. Nice compromise. I like it. The ionizer emits a maximum of 5 PPB of ozone which is 25 times under the FDA limit for indoor medical devices. The ionizer cannot be turned off. I see no dirt sticking to the walls so it might be a bipolar device. Either way it works well. There is also a thinly coated woven carbon fiber mesh that is supposed to help with odors and VOC's but it does nothing at all. My VOC meter did not budge in the slightest. The activated carbon filter also adds an odor that faintly smells like the ashes in a wet camp fire. Again, it's very faint. It did fade some over the first month but not completely. BlueAir sent me another filter cartridge and it had the same problem. My 311i+MAX had the same off gassing odor for a few days but then it dissipated. Others have commented about the 211 odor issue on Amazon, so maybe it's a hit or miss problem or maybe I just don't like wet campfires. The carbon inner filter can be peeled off of the inside of the main filter. It wasn't hard. I'm not sure if it's a structural part of the main filter. I didn't get a chance to try it out before I sent it back. I really wanted to keep the 211 around as my main work horse to protect the HEPA and carbon filters on my more expensive air purifiers.I bought this for my ragweed allergies and for severe allergies to household dust. For that purpose it's done a super job and my particle meter stays near zero. My head and lungs breathe easier and there is less dust in general. The main filter has a tremendous amount of surface area. I took it apart and stretched it out and it is 64 feet long and 9 1/2"s wide. Pretty impressive. To get complete relief I had to run it much harder than I imagined. In my 150 sq. ft. bedroom with 11' ceilings I leave it set on the 3rd highest speed 24 hours a day. I relocate it one day a week and will run it on high all that day along with a high speed floor fan assisting it to help get all of the allergens airborne until they are captured by the 211's filter. I also follow all of my allergist suggestions as far as bedroom hygiene (which is a lot of extra work). All of this together gives me compete relief and I can breathe and I save a ton of money on Tier 4 drugs. (Household dust triggers my COPD).Some comments on airflow and correct sizing. I started with the BlueAir 311i+MAX and needed to run that at it's highest speed to keep the dust under control and to offset the effects of a dirty HVAC system. (My system can deliver dirty air at a rate faster than the purifier can clean it). Running the 311 wide open was an annoying amount of noise so I moved up to the 211i+MAX and ran it on 3. Lower speeds did not benefit me very much. Sleep mode and low did absolutely nothing for my breathing.Keeping the purifier clean has been far more work than I imagined. The exterior pre filter (sock) is a very loose weave when stretched out over the machine and it lets quite a bit of dust get through to the main filter. I vacuum the exterior pre filter sock every 4 to 7 days and will vacuum the main filter at the same time. My vacuum cleaner has pretty high airflow and I was collecting about a quarter cup of poofy to a very fine dust every cleaning session. N95 mask recommended.This has been a wonderful machine and I love it but I hated the smell so I sent it back on the last day. It took 7 more days for the odor to fade away. I'm not sure if it's just me or if any average person would react to that smell like I did. BlueAir needs to do better. The thin plastic mesh that they lightly dusted with activated carbon and then glued to the inside of the main filter is worthless and needs to go. To advertise it as effective with VOC's and odors is dishonest. A high integrity company would not do that. This is a classy and high functioning particle air purifier that can clean A LOT of air cheaply but it's hampered by a cheesy and cheap activated carbon dust insert.Power consumption was outstanding. On the lowest speed it burned 6.25 watts. Second speed 10 watts. Third speed 18 watts (amazing airflow). Highest speed 41 watts. Power consumption remained steady as I simulated a clogged filter. The LED's and displays can be dimmed with the control panel or the app. The app really began to grow on me over time. It gives you compete control of the machine and the ability to make incremental blower speed adjustments. The app is 2.4GHz only.Very nice air purifier. The fit and finish is good and it looks good. It also performs well. My lungs found its presence in my bedroom to be comforting and healing.

I am reviewing the BlueAir 211i Max and 411i Max series in this review as I bought both - one for living room and one for bedroom. Bottom line, these are very impressive units and for the price I am impressed and pleased with each for functionality and effectiveness.

Pros for the BlueAir series. very very quiet. On auto maintenance mode - you can't hear the thing. These are smart machines. You can monitor every aspect of your air quality through the app. You can adjust the control lights from off to bright. It tracks months of air quality data for the room it is in by month, week, day. You can adjust from sleep mode, auto, and 3 fan speeds using the app remotely. It tells you how much filter life is left. It tells you the outside air quality and compares to your inside.

Example of its effectiveness; I was sautéing some Italian sausage and onions, the unit detected the particles and immediately went into high mode for about 5 minutes until all the odor was eliminated and then went back to silent. The front LED bar changes from Blue to Green, orange and red depending on the air quality while at the same time adjusting the fan speed to address the corresponding level of air quality indicated. Same thing happened when smoking some meat on the back patio. I left the door open to bring in the food, the unit detected the smoke and the front LED went red. After closing the door, it ran on high mode until the LED indicators began to regress back to blue and the fan speed decreasing accordingly until all the smoke odor was eliminated from the room.

Cons for the BlueAir product. It is a bit pricier than other options - but for all the differences - so far, I feel the Blue Air product is definitely worth the price difference, for me at least.

What I have not addressed: the longivity of the products; the life of the filter; ease of maintaining; Both of my purchases are within the first month;

Bought for a smaller space (kitchen and living room), roughly 400ish sqft, and this has dramatically improved the air of our apartment with two potty training puppies. Odors are gone within minutes regardless of the source, except for food being cooked in the kitchen which I think is a huge plus. I can breathe! Our company uses these exclusively so I have two in my home. What a huge difference in the air. It's fresher and visibly cleaner. There's less dust on the furniture. The house now smells fresh after a long weekend away. I love that it is self-adjusting based on inside and outside air quality. You have to get this smart-enabled model. It is incredibly lightweight making it easy to swap around the house when needed. My boys love borrowing it to get rid of the boy smell. Set up is as easy as opening the box, unwrapping, and turning it on. You don't have to program it if you don't want to but I highly suggest you do. It's fun.

Style: Large RoomVerified Purchase
I set out to buy a new air purifier to replace one that is crazy noisy, even on the lowest setting. I hoped to find one that would be near-silent on the lowest setting. At a minimum, I wanted one quiet enough to easily forget about, and wouldn't make me turn up the TV volume. (more on that later)

There are several that claim to be whisper-quiet on the low setting, so the purchase decision came down to other factors.

I decided on the Blue Pure 211+ because I like the design from a functional standpoint. It draws air from all sides and passes through a box-like filter that has significantly more surface area than most other air purifiers. The washable pre-filter sock catches larger particles (dog hair in my case), which hopefully makes the hepa filter last longer. It also looks nice, which is important since I use it in the living room. It seems to hit the mark on all of these secondary factors.

So what about my #1 requirement (noise)? Well, it's not as quiet as I had hoped, but MUCH, MUCH better than my old one. There are two distinct sounds: mechanical hum from the fan itself, and the sound of air rushing through the unit. On the low setting, the room has to be completely silent to hear the airflow, but the monotonous drone of the fan is definitely noticeable. On the medium setting, the rush of air drowns out the mechanical hum, so it's more of a white-noise. But that makes it loud enough that I would need to turn up the TV volume. The high setting is quite loud, but that's fine if you only need to use it on high once in a while.

Other than that, there's the price. I mean give me a break, it's a box fan with a filter. Hard to see that being worth more than $100. Ok, it's a _pretty_ box fan with a filter. Maybe the aesthetics are worth an extra $50. But this costs $300.

Overall, it's a good air purifier and I'll keep it, but I probably won't buy a second one for the other room. It's definitely overpriced and not as quiet as I had hoped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathe Easy - Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier Works!

Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier is an amazing product! There’s almost zero assembly required. You unbox, put the washable outer filter on, you plug it in, and tap front button to turn on to start. Within 15 mins of it being on in my room, immediately I noticed how light and fresh the air is. There’s no unpleasant scent at all other than the new filter smell which doesn’t bother me. After 1 1/2 weeks of using it, this new filter smell is gone and it’s just fresh air. I love it. It gets rid of cooking smells too. I love cooking fresh fish often, and man, this purifier eliminates the odour within an hour compared to 3-4 days of lingering fish smell inside of the house. No more opening windows in the middle of winter just to air out odours. Noise Level is appropriate and can be tolerated. First level of air option is very quiet and almost no noise. Second level option you can hear the fan but sounds like a subtle white noise, Third level of air option, strong fan noise but man it’s very effective! Manoeuverability is easy. I like that the button to turn on the purifier is tap sensitive. The machine could use a nook for the hands on the sides for easier to move from one place to the other. There’s a warning label on top of the machine to carry the machine from the bottom when moving or carrying. The fan on top is connected to the filter at the bottom. There’s a locking mechanism between the two chambers, but I don’t feel it’s a sturdy lock and agrees that it’s safer to carry from the bottom and not from the sides of the machine. Weight is light for younger folks but I don’t recommend grand parents to carry the machine on their own. Overall, amazing air purifier!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite air purifier.

I've tried many, many air purifiers. This one is definitely the winner. It's one of those things where it works so well, that you don't notice it. Strange, but true. We've gotten so used to having no odors around the house that soon as we leave our front door we notice a wall of smell (smoke, cooking fumes from other residents, etc). It's very quiet, super efficient, the only drawback is the slightly pricey filter, but I'm more than willing to pay $140 a year (new filter every 6 months of continuous use/$70 per filter) for *actually* clean air.

Horrible.....

[I usually don't review a product until I have been able to test or use it for at least a number of weeks or months. This allows my family to test its' durability/reliability and also lets us see how enjoyable or usable it is over the long term, whether it's a mattress, TV or even a dog collar. Cheers!]

𝙐𝙋𝘿𝘼𝙏𝙀 #1: I wrote an update a few weeks ago (late April, '24) after my brother went to purchase one these but called and told me the price was over $550 CAD. I told him he must have the wrong the model but in a nutshell, over the past 3 out of 4 weeks, this model has been listed for sale as high as $739.58 CAD. My original review further below is based on my purchase price lat Fall of $293 CAD. This was a fantastic unit for the $300 price point. However, there are better air purifiers in the $600 and $700 price range.

𝙐𝙋𝘿𝘼𝙏𝙀 #2: I knew it was too good to last. We used this Blue Pure 311i+ Max Air Purifier for quite a while (4 months?) before I wrote my original review. I gave it 5 stars (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) because it had performed so well and had not faltered in any way and I could not see any problems arising. Ooops.

The power button has now become quite unresponsive and the lights that show you the fan speed you are on do not work except for Level 2. (No idea why only that one.) The only real way to operate the unit is by using the app on our phone which is both a blessing and an annoyance. We are a couple who turn our cell phones off at night and leave them on our desk chargers. We have an old fashioned land-line in our bedroom that friends and family know to call for emergencies.

Anyway, forgetting to adjust the fan speed while one of our phones is on is certainly a "first-world problem". However, considering this air purifier is literally "just" a control board, fan, motor and plastic housing sitting on top of a large, round filter that sits in the equivalent of a planter saucer all wrapped in a "pre-filter", I honestly thought that since the control board is one of the 3 essential parts of this device, they would have built it like a tank if they were trying to sell this air purifier at prices north of $700.

I will reach out to the company and see how they respond and update this review further so you stay as informed as we are. In the meantime, take good care.

This is a review of the....**Blue Pure 311i+ Max Air Purifier**

INTRO:

I have had asthma since I was a baby. The family "joke" is that I came out of the womb wheezing instead of crying and the worry from the doctors is what gave my mom grey hair in her early 30s.

Anyway, asthma inhalers and air purifiers have been a part of my life forever. We currently have a European company's hospital-grade model in our living room and previously had its little bedroom version in our bedroom but that model died prematurely. The European IQ company has a North American office but it's head office is in California. Any warranty work has to be shipped to California at the owner's expense. Shipping costs were more than the model was worth so that is why we went looking for new options.

When we saw the other reviews for this model, I researched it even further. Seeing other positive reviews elsewhere, I decided to take the plunge, purchase it here on Amazon and let my lungs decide for me. (It's easy to tell whether or not an air purifier is working well or not -- I will either start having asthma episodes again or full blown attacks or I will remain relatively stable and my sinuses will stay their see-saw selves.)

When this Blue Pure 311i+ Max arrived, we unpacked it and let it run in our basement to "air out" and do any off-gassing it may have needed to do. After a few days, we put it in our bedroom and put it on high while my wife vacuumed in there. (That probably sounds sexist but I cannot be around a vacuum - gives me major asthma flare ups. That is why I do the laundry.) We downloaded the app (first time we have ever used an app on a minor appliance like this) and played around a bit.

We found that a 65% fan speed is the perfect speed for the Blue Pure 311i+ Max to give us some gentle, pseudo white noise in the background while surprisingly still giving the air purifier enough speed/power to recirculate a surprising amount of air. (You can set the fan to various fan speeds in the app on your phone. If you don't want to use your phone, you have 5 or so options to choose from on the unit itself.)

To the important points:

~~~~~~~~
PROS:
1. Does a surprisingly good job at cleaning our air. The proof is in my lungs and from my pharmacy; fewer asthma issues and fewer inhaler refills for the two inhalers that I need to keep in my bedroom. The performance of this Blue Pure 311i+ Max is currently on par with the original performance of the bedroom-sized iQAir that we had before its motor blew.
2. As mentioned earlier, because of my asthma I cannot be anywhere near a vacuum (which is why I do laundry) so my wife vacuums the pre-filter weekly (which is just a thin fabric lining on the outside of the Blue Pure 311i+ Max ), and we are due for another HEPA filter replacement to keep my asthma in check, but at this rate, the original cost of the Blue Pure 311i+ Max (and replacing the HEPA filters more regularly than what is needed by most people) is still a far better value than the other air purifier brand we were using in the bedroom.
3. Not a huge positive but rather just a preference: this model appears to suck air in from all around its lower 360° body. There are many manufacturers that do this but this model then shoots the clean air out in various directions from the top. Some goes straight up, a little to the back, a little to the left, a lot more to the right etc. I am not sure if this is on purpose or not but this "randomness" helps to prevent drafts or "breezes" from forming in a small room like a bedroom if you don't want them (i.e. Think about the draft that is created by a fan in a small room. Even if the fan is stationary and isn't aimed at you, you eventually feel the moving air. If it's Winter and already cool in the bedroom, you'll understand.)
CONS:
1. None. Seriously. No cons (so far).
It is EXTREMELY rare for me (or a family member) to like something 100% but it is a first for me and my better-half to both have nothing negative to say about something.
We have had this Blue Pure 311i+ Max since last year and it has exceeded our expectations in every way. It moves tons of air if needed / it purifies the air very well / the air quality monitor seems to work well and matches the European IQ company's air quality measurements pretty closely / it can be absolutely quiet if needed but still clean the air / replacement HEPA filters are very reasonable priced / maintenance is simple....
I will edit this review if there is anything that happens to this Blue Pure 311i+ Max. I kind of hope I have something negative to say or the app fails because I REALLY don't like giving 5 stars all around and not having anything negative to say. :( But so far, this Blue Air product is a gem and is delivering on all fronts. I am blown away by something so good at this price point.
I hope this review has been helpful. Stay safe. :)
