Good, stylish straighteners but no longer repairable
The straighteners are supplied, together with a heatproof plate guard and instructions, in a luxury red velvet vanity case inside a high-end gold and black box. The vanity case has a plastic insert which holds the straighteners, this can be removed and the vanity case is fully lined on the inside. The straighteners are very stylish, not too heavy, good to hold and come with a long lead, approx. 2.6m and fitted with a 5A moulded-on UK plug. To turn on you press and hold the on-off button and the straighteners play the start up tune; they heat up very quickly and once to the correct temperature they make a bleep sound. On turn off they play the shut down tune; (really not needed as there is an indicator around the on-off switch to show operation). My wife thought the Platinum+ straighteners worked very well and she particularly liked the heatproof plate guard which she thought was a really good idea; she didn’t think the vanity case was needed though. She didn’t, however, feel that the Platinum+ straighteners worked any better than her existing ghd straighteners. She bought the first from her hair salon nearly 20 years ago after they recommended them, it has been repaired with a new mains lead and hinges but it still works very well; she also has a narrow plate version which has also had a new mains lead and also still works well; both straighteners have an EU two-pin plug and removable UK converter which has proven to be brilliant for taking on holiday as you just remove the converter, much more convenient. The Platinum+ straighteners come with a 3 year guarantee but cannot be repaired which seems a retrograde step, (on her last visit the hair salon said they were unhappy about having to throw them in the bin when they stopped working as they’d previously had them repaired). Although minor, the EU/UK adapter was a really handy touch. Overall, pretty straighteners which work well, but not an improvement.

I was always getting the original classic GHDs when I was ready for a new pair, so I was dubious to try a different set. These are fab though, so I'm so pleased. Tried them out at a GHD stand at a department store, and talked through the options. These are better for regular use on hair, as not as damaging to your hair. My worry was the grip on the hair, but these are perfect. Grip my hair well, easy to hold and use. I like to curl my hair with straighteners, and these are even better than my previous ones as they have a curved design so easier to manoeuvre and get those curls.

Whilst the quality of these is just as expected, I found something of a snag that never did expect and it’s than when I use it to curl, which is designed to do as well as straightening, the borders pulled my hair out. Not sure if only mine has a poor finish as I never heard this before. Otherwise I do notice my hair is healthy and shiny after using it and lasts a lot longer than I’m used to for my thick unruly hair.

Very easy to operate, I never burnt my hand while handling the straighteners like it does with other straighteners. my hair is shoulder length, so I have no problems with snagging. if I go 2 days without washing my hair, and my hair is still clean, I find that using the straighteners on second day of unwashed hair that it makes my hair greasy, so it is best to wash and dry your hair on the day you use the straighteners. I was tempted to purchase the Duet GHD straighteners, but unsure if Duet has the same technology as the GHD Platinum Plus, it is important to have the best technology for your hair.
