In the tradition of Sloane Crosley, Mindy Kaling, and Katie Heaney, a hilarious and insightful memoir about one New York City Millennial’s journey to find herself, her dream career, and true love, all while juggling a truly unique job as the world's only professional bridesmaid.

After moving to New York City in her mid-twenties to pursue her dream of writing—and not living on the “Upper East Side” of her parents’ house anymore—Jen Glantz looked forward to a future of happy hours and Sunday brunches with her besties.

What she got instead were a string of phone calls that began with, "Jen, I have something exciting to tell you!" and ended with, "I'd be honored if you would be my bridesmaid." At first she was delighted, but it wasn’t long before she realized two things: all of her assets were tied up in bridesmaid dresses, and she herself was no closer to finding The One. She couldn't do much about the second thing (though her mother would beg to differ), but she could about the first.

One (slightly tipsy) night, Jen posted an ad on Craigslist advertising her services as a professional bridesmaid. When she woke up the next morning, it had gone viral. What began as a half-joke suddenly turned into a lifetime of adventure for Jen–and more insight into the meaning of love than she was getting from OKCupid—as she walked down the aisle at stranger after stranger's wedding.

Fresh, funny, and surprisingly sweet,
Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire) is an entertaining reminder that even if you don't have everything together, you can still be a total boss—or, at the very least, a BFF to another girl in need.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Full of humor and candid reflections, [Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire)] tackles the relatable struggles of young adulthood." ― Bustle

“Writing with wit, self-awareness, and genuine interest in the life stories all around her, Glantz expresses a warm appreciation for everyone confronting the challenges she faces. Readers will feel as if they’re chatting with a friend, laughing while trading horror stories about the trials of dating, wedding mishaps, and that crazy job you love to hate. A winning suggestion for fans of Faith Salie, Sloane Crosley, and Mindy Kaling.” ―
Booklist

“Funny and at times touching, the book is a thoroughly modern story about love and youth, right down to the open, not necessarily happy-ever-after ending. Quirky and bighearted." ―
Kirkus Reviews

“[Glantz] writes in a charming and funny fashion that makes her easy to root for.” ―
Publishers Weekly

“If you've ever been to a wedding, been in a wedding, or had a wedding, this book will go down easier than the third rum and coke at your best friend's cousin's bachelorette party you somehow had to go to. With warmth, humor, optimism, and more than a few embarrassing moments, you'll bring a little bit of Jen Glantz to every wedding you go to from here on out. You can practically feel her cheering you on, or at least stressing out with you. I feel you, girl. And so will many others.” -- Alida Nugent, author of You Don’t Have to Like Me

"Meet the new best friend you didn't know you needed. Jen Glantz will find her way into your heart one first dance at a time.
Always a Bridesmaid For Hire is the amusing real-life story of what happens when you carve a career path no one has ever heard of, and make everything up as you go along. This taffeta tale will leave you in stitches, wondering what REALLY happened behind the scenes at every wedding you've ever been to." -- Laurie Davis, author of Love at First Click

“Reading
Always a Bridesmaid (for Hire) feels like splitting a bottle (or three) of wine with your funniest, most honest bestie, as she regales you with disastrous, thrilling, and just plain ridiculous stories from her life. Jen is hilarious, so real, and utterly full of heart--you can't help but fall more and more in love with her with every page." -- Gabi Moskowitz, co-author of Hot Mess Kitchen and producer of Freeform's Young & Hungry

“Humorous and poignant, Jen Glantz is the perfect blend of talented writer meets everyday girl. Jen is the kind of writer you admire while secretly wishing she were your best friend. This book will leave you nodding your head in agreement while cheering Jen on in her quests to embrace adulthood and discover love. A beautiful read!” ―
Hannah Brencher, author of If You Find This Letter

Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire) reminds me of the esteemed Nora Ephron, with the laugh-out-loud moments of David Sedaris. I read the last page and then thumbed right back to the first to re-read again. This book will introduce Jen Glantz to the world; you don't want to miss this skilled humorist’s debut.” -- Molly Ford Beck, founder of Smart, Pretty, & Awkward and host of Forbes’s Two Inboxes podcast

“A hilarious backstory full of wit that details how one tipsy idea turned into an overnight sensation. From moving to New York to pursue a writing career to helping brides she's never met on their big day, Jen's book will be relatable to anyone looking for love or just trying to figure things out.” ―

From a guy's point of view, I have to admit that I didn't think I would relate to this book when It was recommended to me by a friend. I finally gave it a chance after hearing the story behind the author's success in the wedding industry and figured I would learn about how to get a startup off the ground. After reading the first few chapters I realized I was in for a treat as the story is much bigger than the successes/failures of a business idea, it's about life and the journey it can take you on from one girl's perspective of how to see the humor in chaotic situations and how to be more opportunistic in dating, business and life in general. I literally got through this book in a single weekend...which for me is a huge achievement because I'm not a speed reader. Personally I found there to be many takeaways that I catch myself referring to in daily conversations and moments from Jen's stories in the book.

Overall I found this book a pleasure to read - the subject is light-hearted with a bit of suspense and nostalgia all mixed in. The humor seems to come from the heart and definitely had me laughing out loud in public while reading some of the chapters. The stories are authentic and illustrative in their tone and wording, which allowed me to really visualize every moment Jen shared about her life.

When the publisher was thinking about the audience for this book I was probably very far from that image; which is exactly what made this book a perfectly fun read. Jen's vivid use of analogy makes reading the book warm and personal. It also does a great job in setting the world around it, especially for those of who have no life experience in Jewish mothers, JDate, pizza (j/k it's awesome), or being a bridesmaid. Witty with good pacing it was a fun journey to read.

My critiques are that, like with many books and autobiographies, 20% less would have gone a long way, but of course many publishers push for a certain length so I can't put that on Jen. I also wish it was truer to the title and shown more of the Bridesmaid for Hire life she created and less of the friends that surrounded her. One of the best stories was her first gig, the second best being a later gig about leaving the job behind including the unlikely friends/bodyguards she meets after the event ends. It's a shame there wasn't more of them.

After reading this book, you will want Jen Glantz to be your best friend (or at least your bridesmaid for hire!). She's funny, genuine, smart and inspiring, but also relatable and down-to-earth. It's obvious from reading that Jen poured her heart into each chapter of Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire), and her stories will resonate with readers of all ages. Whether you've been a bridesmaid zero or fifty times, this book has something for everyone. It shines a light on the wedding industry, but more than that, Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire) will give you a glimpse into the life of an young woman entrepreneur who refused to take "no" for an answer or settle for less than she deserved. Truly inspiring!

I wanted to love this book - all I was looking for were some funny anecdotes about being a frequent bridesmaid in weddings, and possibly some details on the logistics of how she dealt with having to essentially be wedding planner/friend/therapist to multiple brides. But I left with only a few stories and the knowledge that she:
1) Loves Pizza - this was mentioned at least 50 times
2) Has a meddling mother
3) Has a life that's a bit of a mess. Seriously, buy an alarm clock and take a shower before leaving the house.
This book would have made a good-ish article or short story (100 pages or less). But it's 300+ plus pages left me feeling unsatisfied that I never heard more than a couple of quick wedding stories with insufficient detail to be fully immersed or entertained.

Jen Glantz is the best narrator. She comes across as genuine, funny, and altogether human in the best way. The book has so many stories about failure, and getting into messy situations, and not always knowing what you're doing, but she makes you realize that all of those things are what make us interesting people. I love the chapter about her business tutor, Ray, but so many of the stories resonated with me! (And I've never been a bridesmaid.) This is a book I will continue to turn back to when I feel like my life isn't going where I want it to or feel like a failure. Always A Bridesmaid For Hire reminded me how crazy our lives and journey's all are, and taking risks is never a mistake!!

This book is great - refreshingly honest, funny & smart, just like the author herself. Jen Glantz took what could have been just a silly craigslist ad and turned it into a full fledged business. She is an inspiration to others (especially young women) to follow your dreams (no matter how wacky or outside the box) & to never, ever give up. The stories she tells in her book, Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire) will make you laugh & cry, and make you feel like you're meeting for drinks and telling stories with an old friend. Buy this book!

Jen Glantz's writing is everything you want--descriptive, funny, joyful, and most importantly, honest. She keeps your attention with this laugh out loud funny memoir of how a crazy idea turned into a full fledge business. Glantz's book is an essential if you have ever been a bridesmaid or been to a wedding, her honest account of her crazy idea will make you feel less crazy. The biggest take away from this book is Jen Glantz's personal mantra of never giving up. You will find inspiration and humor all while laughing over this page turner, which I recommend enjoying with a slice of pizza.
