I don't know about you guys, but I can never get enough of some of the social animations in MMORPGs.

There are few things I like better in the Lineage 2 Open Beta than to run up to random players and perform the "Advance" gesture with my Orc.

It's basically a call to arms. The character thrusts his weapon arm forward, body taut, and shouts a battle cry.

The orc battle cry (male) sounds like "EEEYOOOOOOOAAAAARRR!!!!"

-- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif --

The payoff is when people reciprocate with their own battle cry. Sometimes a passer by will join in. One time me and about 5 other players just stood there in a circle shouting and gesticulating...it's equal parts hilarious, cute, and intriguing.

To me of course. -- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif --

I did the same thing often in A Tale in the Desert. The character could perform a flip...that was fun.

I just think it's fascinating to see different people...strangers from all over the world...react to such a simple thing.

What are some of your favorite social animations?

++ on UO bow... it was simple.. no thrills but you sure could have fun with it. I would walk up to total strangers, stand DIRECTLY in front of them. then just start slamming the control-b. It was rather unerving <G>

I tend to use social animations as a joke. The more stupid looking the better. Nothings as horrible as the ogre dance in EQ... So that gets used often.

Ofcourse ... /rude, /gesture or /bird

Shadowbane had really good socials. "/soc dance" had your guy do a little river-dance style thing. "/soc laugh" was your standard laugh, complete with sound (which FFXI lacks -- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif --), while "/soc rofl" had your guy actually roll around on the ground laughing his ass off. There was also a "/soc strut" that was always fun to do, and i wish they had some thing like it in FFXI.

I always found it funny how in EQ, a lot of 2 handed blunt weapons somehow have the 2 hand pierce animation. So you end up with a guy "poking" the monster with a giant hammer or club. Has to be seen to be funny though.

Waving at a guy in MAX armor in Planetside is kinda funny -- but only when the guy is shooting you with ineffective weaponry and you are about to kill him.

*tink* *tink* GREETINGS! *BOOM* *aaaiiiieeeee*

I like the "aircraft summoning dance" in the Battlefield games myself. It involves running around in circles and jumping, usually you get a group of people doing it too -- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif --

In Anarchy Online, the Atrox race has a great middle-finger animation.

This huge dude with meat-paw hands giving an 80's crossed-arm middle-finger, followed by a double highway-salute. Hilarious!

The Atroxes also have a fantastic /disco emote, where the dude goes nuts doing a john travolta Saturday Night Fever number. I get no end of laughs out of those two.
