Thank you for sharing your expertise, Josh Matthews 👏
Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a panel discussion for the CRC TiME Natural Capital Accounting Symposium at the ANZAC Club, on Whadjuk Noongar Country. Chaired by Guy Boggs, and speaking alongside Nic Pollock and Renee Young, this was an enjoyable opportunity to combine my passion for “making nature make business sense” with environmental impact assessment, closure planning and project management, as well as discussing my thoughts on how Natural Capital Accounting could be implemented within the Mining Industry. Grateful to all the speakers for their time, insightful presentations and case studies, sparking valuable reflections for all attendees, Libby Pinkard, Lisa Bambic, Anthony O'Grady, Ljiljana Pantelic, Emma Gagen, Heidi Mippy, Owen Nevin, Rachel Standish, Stephen White, Lucy Commander, Phil Cryle, Vern Newton, Bryan Maybee & Chris McCombe. While the journey towards full adoption of NCA continues, progress is evident daily, through the dedication of many individuals. For those interested in delving deeper into NCA, below is a link to the recent CRC TiME / Curtin University and CSIRO publication: Natural Capital and the Resources Sector - A practical guide for corporate natural capital accounting, assessment and disclosure. https://lnkd.in/gniVytpv WSP in Australia | WSP | Calibre

Congratulations to our researchers and leadership team who presented in Ohio 👏
CRC TiME research was well received at the Global Conference on Coal Transitions in Columbus Ohio. There was great interest in the Collaborative planning work in La Trobe Valley presented by Jess Reeves Reeves as a model for other regions. CRC TiME supported student Fitsum Semere Weldegiorgis spoke about his work in economic diversification in Bowen basin which was also well received. I gave a presentation based on our Beyond Closure paper and there was strong interest. UQ CSRM was also well represented including Julia Loginova Vigya Sharma and Shazia Imam The conference included diverse workshops and field trips including a visit to ‘a novel PMLU in the form of The Wilds’ - a wildlife safari park complete with Rhinos, Giraffes and Cheetahs. Plus a visit to recreation park on formerly mined lands with the largest coal bucket ever produced (or so it’s claimed). It’s been incredible week! CRC TiME Jeffrey Jacquet

Our Research Director Tom Measham is in the USA, learning about how coal mining communities experience mine closure. Important to this is understanding local industrial and cultural heritage as well as post-mining land use and future economic opportunities. Building connections and learning from global experience helps us and our partners learn what actions can best enable communities to thrive. #netzero #decarbonisation #postmininglanduse #nationalsciencefoundation #coaltransitions #communities #regionsintransitions
Great to spend a few days exploring the coal mining towns, industrial heritage and post-mining land uses of the Ohio river basin and Appalachia region- spanning Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania- sometimes called the cradle of the North American Industrial Revolution, with Jeffrey Jacquet. The tour included an impressive number of power stations (aka power plants), many of which have closed recently or are closing soon. These included the recently closed Sammis plant in Stratton Ohio that is built on top of a highway (providing a quasi drive through experience). The river is key to connecting the mines, electricity generation and industry, including the transportation of coal in barges. Great also to see the role of the arts, from murals to museums. Also paying respect at the monuments to those who lost their lives (including the 119 who died in an explosion at the Benwood mine in Marshall County in 1924). CRC TiME

A full house to discuss Natural Capital Accounting in Perth today 🏡🍃🍂 They are exploring the ‘how’ of NCA - a new way of accounting for impacts on nature over time - in the mining industry. It’s also the official launch of the new NCA resource suite. Check out here: https://lnkd.in/gBg5_W_6 We’ll also host a webinar soon to explore the NCA resources suite. CRC TiME reposted this
Accounting for nature in mining. ⛏️ We've partnered with CRC TiME and Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on an Australian-first project: a suite of new resources to support the mining industry to adopt Natural Capital Accounting (NCA). Developed over 18 months, the resources are intended to build industry capability, understand the sector’s readiness to adopt NCA, and to enable consistent application and reporting of natural capital information over time. Dr Anthony O’Grady, our Senior Principal Research Scientist in the Natural Capital group, and Project Manager on this CRC TiME project, is excited by the potential opportunities for mining companies arising from these new reports. “We hope these reports provide a step in the right direction for Australia’s mining industry in generating a consistent, efficient and effective approach to NCA adoption and implementation," Anthony said.

PUBLICATION ALERT: A new suite of resources released today will help build capability, systems, data and knowledge to implement Natural Capital Accounting in the mining industry. Natural Capital Accounting is a way of accounting for impacts on nature over the life of projects. The resources suite includes: - A business case, gap analysis and roadmap for implementation - Practical guidance - Case study report - Forecasting study. We were proud to lead the project with partner CSIRO, with input from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water - who initiated the project. We'll share more about the project, partners and findings over the next few weeks. In the meantime, check out the reports here: https://lnkd.in/gQ4DgqvP

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting some partner representatives from The Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute, ARC Training Centre for Healing Country, CSIRO, The University of Western Australia, and ChemCentre for a NAIDOC Week lunch. Thank you to all who came together to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

💡 ICYMI: Research into ESG risk, uncertainty, and the mining life cycle 💡 Our Program Leader Bryan Maybee collaborated with Eric Lilford and Michael Hitch, PhD, P.Eng, P.Geo on this paper published in The Extractive Industries and Society, June 2023. "Common ESG risks include those related to climate change impact mitigation, environmental practices and duty of care. From a social and governance risk perspective, elements may include respect for human rights, anti-bribery and corruption practices, as well as compliance to relevant laws and regulations." "Although some ESG risk elements remain constant over the asset holding period, others may be more fluid, and in this paper, we embrace the notion of uncertainty and a broader acceptance and comfort in the unknown."
