In the first one someone could read the phrase “here lies pistos [i.e. faithful] Stachys”, that causes reasonable associations with the homonymous first bishop of Byzantium, who was ordained by the apostle Andrew in Argyropolis. Our research in byzantine hagiographical and patriographic sources confirms the original emergence of the first Christian community of Byzantium in the same area, which was called Argyropolis.
In addition, the sources save important information about the burial of Stachys in an underground tomb in Argyropolis, where also Christian martyrs from neighboring areas were buried and a Christian necropolis was developed and existed until the 19th century.
We therefore believe that the epitaph for Stachys, found in the area of ancient Argyropolis, is most likely related to the well-known first bishop of Byzantium.

During the previous century, the Holy Mountain had experienced a serious spiritual revival largely due to the development and strengthening of hesychastic teaching, which was initially achieved through the efforts of the great father of Byzantine Hesychasm, St Gregory Palamas, along with a significant number of other athonite monks that included the future Patriarchs Philotheos Kokkinos and Kallistos I. The hesychastic tradition was further cultivated on the Holy Mountain during the 15th and 16th centuries despite the spiritual crisis which is described by such learned monks as Pachomios Roussanos and Maxim the Greek.
Moreover, discussion surrounding the controversial question of the union of the Byzantine Church with Rome remained in the foreground on the Holy Mountain throughout this period. It appears that this issue continued to provoke bitter disputes on Athos in the years following Ferrara-Florence, as can be discerned from a letter sent by St Mark Eugenikos to the monks of Vatopedi around the year 1442.
Another theological question appearing around the beginning of the 16th century was tied to the rise of the German theologian and leader of the Reformation, Martin Luther in Europe and the question how his theological positions ought to be confronted. The Serbian Protos of Athos, Gabriel, engages in correspondence and takes up this matter in his letter written in 1534 addressed to the King of Hungary, John Zapolya, in which he presents the teaching of the Orthodox Church on particular themes which conflict with the teachings of Luther.
In this same period, during which scholars on Mount Athos were occupied with the burning theological questions of the day, aspects of monastic life were discussed in several texts containing precise ascetical and hagiographical content. In these texts, whose readers were first and foremost the monks of Mount Athos themselves, the ideals of the monastic life were demonstrated and taught either by direct or indirect means. This life was seen το exemplify the cenobitic manner of life, as was so emphatically noted by Pachomios Rousanos and by Damascene the Studite in his work «To those Monks who Desire to be Saved». The common aim of these authors was to challenge the idiorhythmic manner of monastic life not based on the monastic rules or the Athonite Typikon, since, on the basis of the spiritual understanding, it is extremely diicult to cultivate a healthy monastic ethos living in that manner. It represents a deformation and twisting of the monastic life, since it undermines monastic virtues such as voluntary poverty and obedience. They also make particular reference to the solitary and hermitic life, something which appears to have been extremely difficult to apply given the spiritual
conditions of that period.
The new martyrs (or new witnesses of the Orthodox Church) functioned as precursor forms and models of the collective resistance of the enslaved Hellenism. For this reason, it could be considered that the volume of Neon Martyrologion (Νέον Μαρτυρολόγιον) functioned as the "Gospel" of the Greek Revolution of 1821, after it conveyed in a completely realistic way to the Christians of the Ottoman state the message of resistance to the pressures and methods of the Ottoman state and religious rulers to lead them to apostasy and to become Turks. This work protected the "Orthodox Genus" from spiritual oblivion and continues to feed the spiritual consciousness of the Greek Orthodox Nation.
In opening up new avenues of inquiry, or revisiting old avenues in new ways, this volume brings forward an important and on-going discussion regarding concepts of personhood in the Byzantine Christian tradition and beyond, and provides a key stimulus for further work in this field.
My arguments and the final proposals I present in the relevant parts of this study reveal that Niketas David the Paphlagonian was the same individual as Niketas the Paphlagonian the φιλόσοφος and ρήτωρ, άγιος and σοφώτατος άνδρας, ταπεινός or σχολαστικός; as David the philosopher, the Neoplatonic scholiast of Porphyry’s Eisagoge, an author whose identity was obscured by the Armenian tradition that developed around him after the eleventh century; and also as Niketas the βασιλικός κληρικός, who flourished in the reign of Constantine Porphyrogennetos. At present, there is no strong evidence to support his identification with other individuals who appear in the sources of this period, such as the monk Niketas, for instance. But we cannot rule out the possibility that new data will emerge in the future, enabling research to give substantiated answers to the questions that still remain, and revealing unknown aspects of the ‘obscure periods’ of Niketas David’s life.
The recent publication of new data about Niketas has made it possible to put together a more complete picture of his eventful life. It examines his origins, his education in Constantinople under Arethas of Caesarea, his teaching career in a school of Constantinople (probably the branch of the Patriarchal Academy that was established in the Church of the Holy Apostles), and his relations with some of the prominent leaders in ecclesiastical and political affairs of this period, such as Arethas of Caesareia, Patriarch Nicholas I Mystikos, and Emperors Leo VI and Constantine VII Pophyrogennetos. There is strong evidence of his involvement and collaboration on the writing of the major synaxaristic and menological collections of the period.
There is also presented Niketas’s voluminous literary output, followed by an thorough research of various questions relating to authenticity, style, sources, influences on the work, and also its own influence on the work of later writers. A very careful examination is made of the works transmitted by the manuscript tradition anonymously, as also of Niketas’s unpublished works, the contents of which are briefly discussed. Research into the manuscript tradition has helped to locate some unknown works by Niketas which have not been included in previous lists of his works. These are his encomium of the Prophet Isaiah, his two paraenetical works (an Alphabetum Paraeneticum and a Stoicheiosis with acrostichis), and his treatise On the limits of human life. Linking the common stylistic features detected in his work with historical circumstances has also made it possible to ascribe to Niketas such anonymous works as two discourses on the translation of the relics of St John Chrysostom (BHG 877h, 878m), and to confirm the authorship of anonymous works that have been attributed to him in the past, such as the discourse on the veneration of the chains of St Peter (BHG 1488n) and the Martyrdom of Eupsychios martyr of Caesarea (BHG 2130). It is also worthnoting that this research has made it possible to ascribe to Niketas another work, concerning the day on which the Lord’s Supper took place (CPG 7267), which was hitherto ascribed to John Philoponos.
As for Niketas’s hagiographic work it was directly connected with what was happening in the sphere of hagiography at that period, for it clearly reveals the features that reflect both the demand for the metaphrasis of the earlier hagiographic texts —not only in the sense of their linguistic reworking, but also, primarily, their theological refinement— and the trend for constructing Menological collections which had taken shape already in the premetaphrastic period. His contribution to this process is attested by four manuscripts: Parisinus gr. 1180 (10th c.), Parisinus gr. 755, Mosquensis 388, and Athos Great Lavra B 112 (11th c.). The first of these took the form of a Panegyricon, which is probably connected with the Church of the Holy Apostles. The other three largely consist in his encomia of the Apostles, which form a brief Panegyrikon, followed by a few more of Niketas’s encomia.
This study on the life of Niketas David the Paphlagonian and his considerable (in terms of both quantity and content) œuvre reveals a significant scholar of the Middle Byzantine period, who played an important role in the spiritual matters of the tenth century, the so-called ‘Macedonian Renaissance’.
It is also noteworthy that this Collection is a brilliant example of the relation between text and icon as it is closely connected with a unique for the orthodox world iconographic program which includes the frescos of 34 neomartyrs in the Katholikon (central church) of the athonite monastery of Xeropotamou, where Dapontes lived as a monk.
A concise history of the metropolitan sees of the Eastern Macedonia is also inserted at the beginning of each chapter.

It includes special chapters on the history of the Monastery from the byzantine era to our days, its buildings, its saints and relics etc.
Of its six chapters the first is devoted to the history of the monastery from its foundation in 1357 to the year 1992 when it finally abandoned the idiorrhythmic system, the last ruling monastery on Athos to do so. The second chapter examines the architectural complex, focusing primarily on the katholikon, part of which dates from the time of the foundation. A third chapter gives a brief account of the artistic treasures of the monastery – the murals of the katholikon, the portable icons, the library, the archive, and the treasury. The last three chapters survey respectively the monastery’s metochia both on and outside Athos, its saints, sacred relics, and feast days, and finally some of its scholars. ….
It is remarkable how much has been achieved at Pantokrator by way of restoration since 1992. External improvements are immediately apparent from a comparison of the aerial view on page 14 with the double-page spread on pages 16–17. Particularly impressive is the work on the tower, the largest such structure on Athos. When the English traveller Robert Curzon visited in 1837, he found it ruinous; and on looking inside the lower storey, he ‘saw the melancholy remains of a once famous library … By the dim light which streamed through the opening of an iron door in the wall of the ruined tower, I saw above a hundred ancient manuscripts lying among the rubbish which had fallen from the upper floor.’ Today the tower has been completely restored and its seven storeys contain impressive interiors. Two basement floors are used for storage. The first floor houses an exhibition of minor art. On the second floor is the library, containing hundreds of manuscripts and thousands of printed books as well as the archive. On the third and fourth floors is the sacristy where the monastery’s treasures are exhibited. Finally on the fifth floor is the Chapel of the Ascension and the icon store where more than 700 portable icons are kept. A selection of the monastery’s icons and other treasures was displayed in the exhibition of ‘Treasures of Mount Athos’ in Thessaloniki in 1997; and a lavishly illustrated volume entitled Icons of the Holy Monastery of Pantokrator was published in 1998 (reviewed by Robin Cormack in the Annual Report of the Friends of Mount Athos, 1999, pp. 75–80). The Pilgrim’s Guide sets these sacred objects in context.
The murals of the katholikon form a highly significant group dating from the 1360s and, according to Euthymius Tsigaridas who has made a detailed study of them, attributable to the school of Panselinos. Unfortunately they were all overpainted in the nineteenth century. The monastery’s collection of icons, on the other hand, is indeed remarkable and some of the best of them are illustrated here. Especially notable is the pull-out of the double-sided icon showing on one side St John the Forerunner and on the other the Forerunner again with the Virgin and Child. This dates from around 1363. Also included are some fine examples of icons from the Cretan school of the sixteenth century attributed to Theophanes the Cretan and Amvrosios Emboros…
The text is well written and, worth stressing, well translated. Wisely the brotherhood has employed the services of a native speaker of English (our member Trevor Curnow) to polish the translation. The illustrations are excellent – well chosen, well designed, and well reproduced. For too long Pantokrator was the pariah of the Holy Mountain. It is clear from this book that it is now one of its jewels".

The aim of the Conference is to highlight the continuing relevance of patristic preaching for the modern world. Renowned university professors and scholars from Greece, France and abroad have been invited to participate in the proceedings in order to bring to light patristic teaching on a series of topics that are widely discussed in our own day: the relationship of man with the natural environment, the equality of the sexes, the equitable distribution of wealth, and the gap between the rich and the poor. Additionally, conference participants will attempt to decode the message that the writings of the Fathers hold for us today about the freedom of the human being as an acting social subject as well as the distinct roles played by Church and State.
The Conference proceedings will take place in the lecture hall of the Society for Macedonian Studies while the special session about the “Patristic Hermeneutics in Dialogue” and the closing ceremony, which will coincide with the feast day of the Apostles Peter and Paul, will be held in the auditorium of the Patriarchal Foundation for Patristic Studies.
Fr Florovsky was a pioneer thinker and formative theologian—in the words of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, arguably “the dean of the Orthodox theologians in the 20th century.” Florovsky’s visionary call for theologians to return to the patristic sources and acquire the mind of the Fathers, as well for the Church to dialogue with the historical and ecumenical challenges of our time, has proved profoundly influential on Christian thinkers to this day.

Hagiography offered the only narrative presentations of Byzantine history to the common Byzantine. In combination with portraits on coins, the series of indictions and the imperial monuments, hagiographical texts were the only means through which the average person could obtain more or less precise data on the phases, reigns and main events of the empire. While historiographical accounts remained the preoccupation of the literati and were read only in aristocratic, imperial and patriarchal circles, readings of the lives of saints, martyrs and miracles were heard in churches and monasteries. If in Byzantium in general there was a narrative notion of the history of the empire, we shall find it in the thousands of manuscripts preserving hagiographical texts.
In order to learn more and to formulate ideas on the history of the common person in Byzantium, we propose a workshop on Byzantine history as it presented itself to the average person. The age of persecution described in the accounts of martyrs will be important. Palestine, even outside the monasteries, takes centre stage in the work of Cyril of Skythopolis, and the destinies of other regions were also highlighted in hagiographical texts intended to expose miracles and angelic lives. The Metaphrastic Menologion gives us a complete version dating from the end of the tenth century, but other hagiographical texts and menologia give us others, all marked by the interests and information available to the hagiographers. In this way, Byzantine monks and devotees had the opportunity to orient themselves in the entire history of the empire from the arrival of Christianity, and sometimes also in earlier periods. Emperors, empresses, bishops and many others would be known to them. One could even learn about distant or lost corners of the empire and about places beyond the borders.
Accordingly, the question is not what we can extract as historical data, but what conceptions of imperial and even ecclesiastical history one could have on the basis of these texts. Which ideological conceptions were most widespread? Could the average persons ask themselves critical questions by entrusting themselves to these presentations? And did the imperial images on coins, in public squares and monuments confirm this simplified historiography accessible to the common Byzantines?

Mount Athos Centre after the completion of ten international scientific conferences, that were organized during the decade 2006-2015, launches this year a new annual event for the promotion and presentation of scientific and research work on Mount Athos, the one of International Scientific Laboratories.
During the annual International Scientific Laboratories, in which there will be no specific agenda, there will be presented scientific papers and research works, original and innovative, individual or collective, of established or young scientists, in history, art, theology, architecture, natural environment, etc. of Mount Athos.
The first International Scientific Workshop will be held during the weekend of December 9 and December 10, 2016, is organized by the Mount Athos Center with liability of the Scientific Committee which is specially set up for this purpose.

Presentation
This project is the result of an initiative by the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy (FTIS) that – collecting some indications from the Church of Milan – integrates the availability of other universities.
Starting from the evidence of the presence of non-Catholic Christians, the ecumenical activity of the dioceses is focused on a progressive involvement of the many Orthodox communities established in the recent years, more and more eager to gain and share a greater presence in the theological, cultural and academic life of the Ambrosian Church.
The suggestion of the Cardinal Archbishop was an intense confrontation in order to promote a fruitful exchange of teachers with the theological faculties of the Orthodox world – from the exchange of visits that took place recently with the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople H.H. Bartholomew I – has sparked the availability and interest of other universities in supporting the initiative, particularly the Department of Russian Language and Culture of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan and the Class of Slavic Studies of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana.
The project consists of a research seminar organized by the FTIS in agreement with some of the Orthodox Theological Faculties of different countries.
The research area is indicated by the theme of the Ecclesial Meeting of Florence in November 2015, promoted by the Italian Episcopal Conference: Christian humanism in the face of new frontiers of contemporary anthropology.
The interest shown by the orthodox theologians to begin a debate on the anthropological impact of the Christian faith nowadays (the general view of the man, the confrontation between religions in a globalized world, as well as some specific issues like the meaning of the family and the conjugal love, the issues related to the beginning and the end of the life, the new open borders from neurosciences and biotechnologies) has generated a series of conferences with many voices, both Catholic and Orthodox, on the key issues of the current " anthropological question".
This project represents the first step of a more ambitious program of cooperation at theological and academic level with the Orthodox Theological Faculties, which aims to create permanent areas of joint research and also, if possible, to establish an exchange of professors and therefore students.
The outcome of this academic research seminar will be the publication of a book on the "new Christian humanism" in a Catholic-Orthodox perspective.
The nature of the subjects treated and the particular Orthodox Catholic perspective, make this program appealing to who – engaged in the ecumenical dialogue or not – has the desire to read in depth the signs of our time.
The seminar not only enables Christian communities to meet together, but wants to take advantage of the urgencies related to social change in order to move forward in the journey toward Christian unity, which has always been at the heart of the Church, and has also been indicated by our Archbishop as a task (at least in term of awareness) for all the communities.
Professors, teachers of religion, priests, catholic, orthodox and christians from other confessions: everyone can seize the opportunity of this meetings to have an experience of confrontation and dialogue with believers from all over the world.
Life in Christ is the gift that God the Father gives to those who believe in his Son Jesus, Christ and Lord, and who accept the graces of the sacraments of Christian initiation. The believer, pilgrim towards the Kingdom, moved by the Holy Spirit, enters into a dynamism of spiritual growth and interiorization. This dynamism carries him towards the accomplishment that saves him from sin and death and lets him taste already in this life the joy of salvation. The gift of divine life, however, requires the believer’s synergy.
The parable of the sower and the seed can illustrate what in the last analysis remains the mystery of God’s love for his Church and its children (cf. Mk 4,1–20; Mt 13,1–23; Lk 8,4–15; Jn 12,23–25). The seed is the Word of God. Jesus Christ is the sower who sows generously, without excluding anybody. The ground, however, is not all of the same quality. The believer must work to purify the ground of his heart. He must consent to live with Christ on the cross and to lose his life for the love of God and of his neighbor. He is called to follow Christ in his passage to the Father. The spiritual struggle in an ever greater obedience to the Word of God is the daily bread that he eats with patience ( cf. Lk 8,15).
The coming conference will help us to examine more deeply some essential aspects of this road along the stages of Christian conversion.
