Smith was running in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Indiana's 6th District. Smith sought the nomination on the Republican ticket.[3] Candidates wishing to run were required to file by the signature filing deadline of February 24, 2012. The primary elections took place on May 8, 2012.

Smith ended his campaign on April 14, 2012.[1] The campaign taking time away from his family is Smith's cited reason for ending his run.[1]
