Ann L. Aiken is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. She joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Aiken served as chief judge of the court from 2009 to 2016. She assumed senior status on December 29, 2023.[1]
Early life and education
A native of Salem, Oregon, Aiken graduated from the University of Oregon with her bachelor's degree in 1974, from Rutgers University with her master's degree in 1976, and from the University of Oregon Law School with her J.D. in 1979.[1]

Aiken was nominated by President Bill Clinton on November 27, 1995, to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Oregon vacated by James Redden. The American Bar Association rated Aiken Unanimously Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Aiken's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 24, 1996. Under provisions of Rule XXXI, paragraph 6 of the standing rules of the Senate, Aiken's nomination was returned to the president on October 4, 1996. President Clinton resubmitted the nomination on January 7, 1997. Hearings on Aiken's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 28, 1997, and her nomination was reported on November 6, 1997. Aiken was confirmed on a recorded 67-30 vote of the U.S. Senate on January 28, 1998, and she received her commission on February 4, 1998. From 2009 to 2016, Aiken served as the chief judge of the district court.[1][2][3][4]
