Ashur Ware (1782-1873) was the third federal judge in the United States District Court for the District of Maine. He joined the court in 1822 after a nomination by President James Monroe. He served on the court for forty-four years before resigning on May 31, 1866. He passed away on September 10, 1873.[1]

Early life and education

Ware was born in Sherborn, Massachusetts and was a graduate of Harvard College, earning his A.B. in 1804.[1]

Professional career

Ware began his career as the editor of the Boston Yankee of Boston MA from 1816-1817 and the Eastern Argus of Portland, ME from 1817-1820. During his time at the Eastern Argus, Ware also opened a private practice legal office in Portland In 1820, he served as the Secretary of State for the State of Maine for two years.[1]

Judicial Career

Ware was nominated to the court by President James Monroe on February 15, 1822 to fill the seat vacated by Albion Keith Parris. The U.S. Senate confirmed him on February 15, 1822 and he was commissioned that same day. He served on the court for forty-four years. He resigned May 31, 1866. Ware was succeeded in this position by Edward Fox.
