Number of filed initiatives final for 2018

This is a research page for collecting information to track the number of initiatives filed in each of the states with an initiative or referendum. This page was updated on the first of each month through June 1, 2018, and lists the number of proposed initiatives as of the first day of the month from September 2017 through June 2018, after which no more new initiatives were filed for the 2018 election cycle.

This page does count:

  • Initiatives that failed to qualify for the ballot because they missed a petition drive deadline.
  • Initiatives that were filed in states with a rolling petition deadline that might still qualify for the 2019 and 2020 ballot.[1]
  • Multiple versions of what appears to be basically the same initiative.[2]
  • Initiatives that have already qualified for a 2018 ballot.

  1. This is true even if sponsors missed their 2019 or 2020 deadline, as long as they did have a chance of qualifying for the 2019 or 2020 ballot.
  2. As evidenced by the fact that the multiple versions were filed by the same sponsor or group of sponsors and include very similar but not entirely identical language.
  3. See 2018 ballot measures and Potential 2018 ballot measures for information about legislative referrals that have qualified or might qualify for the 2018 ballot.
  4. Only measures that were accepted and officially received by the attorney general are counted.
